Summer Spirits: Five Perfect Poolside Cocktails
You've finally done it; you've finally revamped your yard and turned it into a little oasis. Instead of sipping the classic piña colada when lounging by the water, why not try something a little different? Any of the drinks listed below would be ideal when lying poolside or relaxing in the hot tub. Once you discover your perfect spa, you can discover the perfect cocktail to go along with it!
Blue Hawaii
A vibrant clear blue color reminiscent of the Caribbean waters, this drink is as pretty as it is tropical in flavor. Perfect after a swim.
Ingredients
- 1 oz. Curacao, blue
- 1 oz. Rum, light
- 1 splash Pineapple Juice
- 1 splash Sour Mix
Method: shaker
Glass: cocktail
Hints: For a more tropical flavor, add more pineapple juice. However, the more you add, the more the color will change from a clear blue to an opaque blue green.
Frozen Cranberry Margarita
Something frozen combined with something tart is always great to sip by the pool.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 oz. cranberry juice
- 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 1 1/4 oz. fresh lime juice
- 2 oz. tequila
- 1 oz. triple sec
- 2 cups ice
Method: blender
Glass: Margarita
Hints: This is a great drink to make in larger quantities. Make a pitcher and share with friends!
Limonata
Think lemonade for adults. The bright citrus flavors go well when soaking up the sun.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces citrus vodka
- 1/2 ounce limoncello
- 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 ounce simple syrup
- 1 lemon slice (optional garnish)
Method: shaker

Hints: For a variation, try substituting your favorite flavored vodka to make your own unique Limonata.
The Ritz
Pomegranate, a super fruit high in antioxidants and vitamin C. Combine it with something bubbly to sip while you relax in the hot tub. Result – the perfect combination.
Ingredients
- 4 oz. Champagne
- 1/2 oz. Triple Sec
- 1 oz. Cognac
- 1 oz. Pomegranate Juice
Method: shaker
Glass: flute
Hints: Mix triple sec, cognac and pomegranate juice in shaker filled with ice first. Then strain liquid into flute. Fill remainder of flute with champagne.
Mudslide
Great for that end of the night soak in the hot tub. Cream, coffee, and chocolate – what could be better?
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 oz Bailey's® Irish cream
- 1/2 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
- Chocolate syrup (optional)
Method: on the rocks
Glassware: old-fashioned
Hints: Rim the glass with a little chocolate syrup first to add a little extra flavor and depth.
Bask in the sun, swim in the pool, top it off with a drink in your hand. These drinks will provide the perfect end to the perfect summer day or night.
