Review: 2018 Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc and Chardonnay

Christopher Null April 7, 2021

Summer drinking usually means keeping it light and simple, and these two wines from Mondavi, both from the 2018 vintage, definitely fit the bill — and at a reasonable price.

2018 Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc Napa Valley – The wine that put Mondavi on the map is as tart as ever, an acidic, grapefruit-heavy wine with green apple and lemon peel backing it up. Put aside your thoughts of tropical fruit. Put aside your thoughts of grassy fields and slate-driven minerals. This is a sour, citrus monster from start to finish — and I’m going to need a picnic of some kind to really perk up to this. B / $23

2018 Robert Mondavi Chardonnay Napa Valley – Melon, guava, and lemon curd meld nicely on this moderated chardonnay, which segues from there into a creamy vanilla note that infuses mashed pears. It’s a simple wine, the lemon peel lingering the lengthiest on the back end, alongside a light note of pineapple and a hint of nutmeg —  but it comes across as decidedly clean and easygoing. Summer in a glass, for sure. B+ / $24
