Review: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch A121 (January 2021)

Review: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch A121 (January 2021)
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch A121 (January 2021)

Christopher Null May 24, 2021

The first Elijah Craig Barrel Proof release of the year, coded A121, is upon us — and hold on to your hats, folks, as it is one of the best releases in the series to date.

For those unfamiliar, these single barrel releases of Elijah Craig (made with a modest amount of rye in the mashbill) are bottled uncut and unfiltered and always at 12 years old. At just under 62% alcohol, it’s a relative lightweight in the series — but I assure you, pay that no mind.

The nose here instantly transports the drinker to the rickhouse, effusive with woody aromatics and some smoldering, scorched earth — but tempered beautifully with sweetness and fruit. Honey and blackberries meld beautifully with peppermint jelly and a grind of pepper, with all the components in lovely balance.

Make the Spanish G&T Your Own

Make the Spanish G&T Your Own

The Spanish Gin & Tonic never went away. A blockbuster drink in the United States about a decade ago, Spain’s gintónica was noted for voluminous balloon glasses (copas de balón) filled with specialty gins, artisanal tonics and a garden’s worth of garnishes. Though it has taken a back seat to flashier drinks, it held steady on many menus, and lends itself to customization at home.

The gintónica has roots in Spain’s Basque region, “sometime between 1999 and 2008,” says Keli Rivers, brand ambassador for Sipsmith Gin and the former bar manager and “Ginnoisseur” at the San Francisco bar Whitechapel. She pinpoints as the epicenter San Sebastián, where forward-thinking chefs would gather for Lo Mejor de la Gastronomía Congress (The Best of Gastronomy Conference) to share ideas, showcase avant-garde techniques and most of all, blow off steam. Gathering at spaces such as Coctelería Dickens or El Museo del Whiskey, one of the chief activities was, Rivers says, “drinking one of the many gins stocked in a large wine glass with plenty of ice, cooling down the warm evenings.”

Eventually, gintónica variations began showing up on the menus of Michelin-starred restaurants like El Bulli in Catalonia, “garnished with items that enhanced what was in the gin.”

By 2013, most of Europe was aware of Spain’s affection for the gintónica; By 2014, the Spanish Gin & Tonic, as it became known here, made its way stateside. Consumers cozied up to copas filled with what Rivers characterizes as “large fruit salad cocktails,” abundantly garnished with colorful citrus or cucumber wheels, fresh herbs and free-floating juniper berries or peppercorns.

Though it’s no longer a novelty, the Spanish G&T remains a staple at many bars. Part of the appeal, says Marshall Minaya, beverage director at gin-focused New York bar Valerie, is that the Spanish version transforms the G&T from an equal-parts highball to a session drink. “A proper Spanish-style Gin & Tonic has a one-to-four ratio of spirit to tonic,” he notes.

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS WELCOME DELAY ON DOUBLING OF E.U. WHISKEY TARIFFS – American Whiskey News

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS WELCOME DELAY ON DOUBLING OF E.U. WHISKEY TARIFFS – American Whiskey News

KENTUCKY DISTILLERS WELCOME DELAY ON DOUBLING OF E.U. WHISKEY TARIFFS

For Immediate Release – May 17, 2021

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The historic Kentucky Distillers’ Association today applauded the joint U.S. and E.U. decision to delay the doubling of tariffs on Bourbon and American whiskey that were set to automatically increase June 1.

“This is welcome news as distillers in Kentucky and across America were perilously close to a crippling blow on European exports,” KDA President Eric Gregory said. “This gives both sides some breathing room to return to free and fair trade and once again level the playing field for Kentucky’s signature spirit.

“We deeply appreciate the leadership the Biden Administration, Congressmen John Yarmuth and Andy Barr, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and all global leaders who are working to resolve this ongoing trade dispute that has slashed exports and jeopardized the certainty of our largest overseas markets.”

1994 Tomatin 25 Year Old “Hunter Laing Old & Rare” Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) (Pre-Arrival) ($249.99)

Tomatin is a fascinating distillery with a unique history and many incarnations, from starting as a bulk blender and supplier and eventually shifting to a steadfast focus on quality single malt production. From the early 1900s through the mid ’70s, Tomatin grew continuously. They added stills multiple times as demand for their product increased exponentially. By 1975, they were the largest single malt production facility in Scotland. Sadly due to market forces they never operated at their full capacity, and by the mid ’80s the massive bust in the market for Scotch was impossible to ignore. Tomatin was liquidated and became the first of many Scottish distilleries to be purchased by Japanese companies. Today owned by the company known as Takara Shuzo, Tomatin has many bottlings on the market, but it is the choicest single casks that command the most attention. Here we have an incredible single cask of sherry-finished Tomatin 25 Year Old at a natural strength of 49.3% ABV. Expect a great value single malt with tropical and stone fruits in abundance, melded with sherry spice and orange peel dipped in chocolate.

Review: Fishers Island Canned Craft Cocktails

Review: Fishers Island Canned Craft Cocktails
Fishers Island Lemonade (“FIL”)

Monica Uhm May 23, 2021

One of the pioneers of ready-to-drink cocktails is Fishers Island Lemonade, launched by Bronya Shillo in 2014 based off the popular signature cocktail served up at the Pequot Inn (based in Fishers Island), which was owned by her family. This year they have added 3 new flavors and a frozen version of their lemonade.

Their motto is “find your island.” So let’s see where we land as we chart our course through their full line.

Fishers Island Lemonade (“FIL”) – Fishers’ original cocktail is made of premium vodka, barrel-aged whiskey, lemon, and honey. This is the benchmark for any drink that promises you “summer in a can.” Straight out of the can, it is refreshing and crisp. Pour it over some ice and a garnish for fun, and you would not believe that there is not a bartender hiding around the corner that is squeezing lemons and jauntily shaking this up on the spot for you. There is no imbalance in any of the ingredients that you may find in other versions; the alcohol sits just right — and I cannot emphasize just how fresh and clean the lemonade tastes. 7% abv. A / $17 per 4-pack of 355ml cans [BUY IT NOW FROM DRIZLY]

Fishers Island Pink Flamingo – Here they’ve added fresh cranberry to the signature FIL, giving it a sunset pink hew. If the FIL is perfectly balanced and evokes sun-kissed bliss, this one will send you into island nirvana. The hint of cranberry actually brings out a zesty grapefruit flavor, complete with a welcoming hint of grapefruit rind to make your tongue dance. Be warned: There is not a trace of alcohol here. None. It would be tempting to sip on this all day long. At 7% abv though, it would be good to muster up some discipline, as challenging as it will be. A+/ $17 per 4-pack of 355ml cans [BUY IT NOW FROM DRIZLY]

DIYDripCoffee (single served pour-over)

A coffee owner in Los Angeles gives back to the community

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, May 23, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ --CoffeeBuyDirect, a coffee wholesaler-distributor, from Los Angeles launched a Kickstarter campaign to fundraise their new drip coffee line and had finally ended. SK Ang, the owner, had been in the coffee business for over 20 years and technology was always a big challenge. He never thought he could do it and did not know fundraising online could take him to a wider spectrum of audience. With the help of his very small mighty team, he received good feedback throughout the fundraising process and was deeply gratified with the backers’ support. The new product line, DIY Drip Coffee, is made and handcrafted locally. The coffee beans are sourced from Colombia, one of the world best coffee origins. The herbal extracts in the coffee, Ganoderma Lucidum often known as Reishi mushroom and the Ginseng are whole plants. These ingredients are highly popular and in demand especially during the pandemic. Reishi mushroom and Ginseng are commonly use in the Southeast Asian culture from dietary consumption to beauty skin care products. The purpose of the creating this new coffee profile is to offer the extra energy boost and enough brain fuel without feeling the coffee jittery.

In return, CoffeeBuyDirect made a pledge to donate coffee to frontline workers in Los Angeles County for those who backed the DIY Drip Coffee project. SK has been wanting to reciprocate and express gratitude to the essential workers at the LA Regional Food Bank regional office in Los Angeles and to those who stood outdoor rain or shine passing food to hungry and struggling families, especially the ones were hit hard by the pandemic. These frontline and essential workers in our community show us vigilance and motivates us to stay resilient in 2020 that kept us all stronger together in 2021 making a milestone moving closer to normalcy again.

DIY Drip Coffee will be available in the market and sold on CoffeeBuyDirect Amazon store in mid-June 2021. Follow @diydripcoffee on Twitter for updates and other buzzing news.

Review: WM Cadenhead Dailuaine 11 Years Old 2008

Review: WM Cadenhead Dailuaine 11 Years Old 2008
WM Cadenhead Dailuaine 11 Years Old 2008

Rob Theakston May 23, 2021

The majority of Dailuaine’s (pronounced “Dal-oo-ayn”) output rests within a blend which some folks might enjoy with passing familiarity: Johnnie Walker. Aside from occasional appearances in Diageo’s Limited Edition and Flora and Fauna series, there is relatively scant Dailuaine representation, save for cameos on the independent bottling circuit. This WM Cadenhead’s release was selected by Chicago super chain Binny’s in 2019, and we present for your consideration a most timely and contemporary review.

The nose is generous and active with butterscotch and vanilla bean on the first approach. With some rest, notes of raisin and allspice emerge. A bit of caution: the allspice influence amplifies quite a bit after adding a few drops of water. The palate is a bit oily at first, with loads of pear making way for a warming blend of vanilla, caramel, and star anise. The bourbon barrel influence arrives briefly afterward, bringing an element of oak and cereal in a pleasant but never overbearing fashion. There’s a medium-long finish of caramel sweetness and lemon cookies, and a hint of spice provides complexity to the conclusion.

It’s a textbook example of bourbon barrel influence on single malt, and if that’s the sort of flavor profile that suits you, you won’t be disappointed here. Availability is limited: A quick inquiry on Binny’s website reveals scant bottles remain in stock spread over various locations.

In celebration of International Tea Day, meet Scientologists and green tea entrepreneurs Masao Oyaizu and Yuki Mori.

Scientologists Masao Oyaizu and Yuki Mori are on a mission to preserve and share a cherished part of Japanese culture—the tradition of green tea.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, May 23, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ -- In honor of International Tea Day, celebrated for the first time last year, the Church of Scientology International invites anyone from tea aficionados to those who know nothing about the beverage to watch an episode of Meet a Scientologist featuring green tea entrepreneurs Masao Oyaizu and Yuki Mori.

According to the United Nations, which directed May 21 to be International Tea Day beginning in 2020, tea is consumed more than any other drink but water. And tea production and processing constitute the main source of livelihood for millions of families.

In this episode of Meet a Scientologist, viewers meet Masao Oyaizu, who was born in the shadow of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka City—an area known for producing the highest quality green tea leaves in Japan. Raised in the family business, Masao learned to grow green tea leaves the old-fashion way. As the tradition of the tea ceremony was replaced by the convenience of bottled green tea, Masao blended his talents with Yuki Mori. Together, they infused an ancient tradition with modern flair.

Review: Nashville Barrel Company Small Batch Rye Whiskey (Batch 2)

Review: Nashville Barrel Company Small Batch Rye Whiskey (Batch 2)
Nashville Barrel Company
Nashville Barrel Company

David Tao May 23, 2021

Nashville Barrel Company is a new brand, and as with many upstarts, they’re relying on sourced products to get the company up and running. Unlike some other upstarts, they don’t seem to have immediate aspirations of opening their own distillery (at least for now). Instead, they’re focusing efforts on a brick-and-mortar tasting room, bottling center, and corporate offices set to open in Nashville’s Railyard District later this year. While they won’t be distilling their own whiskey anytime soon, the founders have been around important whiskey circles for years. The founding ownership group includes Mike Hinds, who sits on the board of Bourbon Charity and is listed as their “Chief Bourbon Guy.” James Davenport serves as the lead “mix master” responsible for blending their initial line of spirits.

That brings us to the whiskey itself. The company launched with a Small Batch Rye, with Batch 1 featuring a blend of four and seven year ryes; Batch 2 is a “duet” of four and eight year rye. The whiskey has a 95/5 mash bill of rye and malted barley, all sourced from Indiana. (Astute rye drinkers will note these are common hallmarks of an MGP-sourced product.) Batch 2 comes in at 100 proof with a run of 15,000 bottles.

The company also offers a Single Barrel Rye, with a Single Barrel Bourbon and a Barrel Aged Rum launching in the coming months. Let’s see how Small Batch Rye Batch 2 holds up.

The rye has an appealing caramel color that holds up well in a glass but doesn’t feature the more amber or purple tints from some others on the market today. On the nose, the rye hits quickly with floral and fruity notes, with a bit of lingering citrus and walnut. The characteristic scent of rye spice soon follows, though it’s a slightly lighter note than many other MGP-sourced ryes you’re likely to find. On first sip, the whiskey is sweeter, with notes of caramel, cinnamon, cocoa, and vanilla. (The vanilla continues to open up with each drink.) The spice coalesces on the palate with a welcome note of black pepper that plays in harmony with the sweeter and fruitier flavors.
