Au Bon Climat’s Jim Clendenen, Colorful Santa Barbara Pioneer, Dies at 68

Jim Clendenen, who brought a love of Burgundy to his groundbreaking Santa Barbara winery Au Bon Climat and helped put the region on the world winemaking stage, died in his sleep the night of May 15 at his home in the Los Alamos district near the town of Buellton, Calif. He was 68.

Clendenen was a tireless proponent and guiding light for Santa Barbara wines from his base in the cool-climate Santa Maria Valley in the northern reaches of the county. His Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from a variety of vineyard sources helped set the quality bar high for the region’s wines. He was also a frequent traveler to restaurants and wineries throughout the world, spreading the gospel of Santa Barbara wines and Burgundian varietals in California.

In this guise, he was an iconoclast in his early career, and a force of nature in his joie de vivre. Clendenen was a legendary cook and often greeted visitors with large lunches and overflowing wine at his utilitarian winery on a corner of the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard, which he helped champion.

“There's no way to overemphasize his importance to the Santa Barbara County wine industry. A pioneer in every possible definition of the word. He was fearless, flamboyant and a never-tiring voice for Santa Barbara wine and California wine in general,” said fellow Santa Barbara vintner Brian Loring of Loring Wine Company.

“He broke down barriers and shined a light around the world for Santa Barbara,” said Greg Brewer of Brewer-Clifton winery. “So many projects down here are variations of what he wanted to do. He transformed Santa Barbara from a source of anonymous fruit for others to a main player on the world stage. For the better part of four decades he was a champion in that regard and we’ve been riding in his wake.”

Our Speyside and Islay indices continue to perform extraordinarily well. Some independent bottlings realized top value gains too while the Arrrrrrrdbeg is the most traded whisky of the month. Here is the Whiskystats Price Update for April 2021! 

The 17 thousand new price observations from April brought no change to the overall upward trend we are witnessing for a couple of months now. Both our major market indices, the WWI and the Fab50, are deep in the greens. The WWI is slowly approaching the 300 index points as April 2021 was the fifth consecutive month without any index losses. At the same time, our fabulous fifty single malts are worth almost 150 thousand Euros. Needless to say that this marks a new all-time record too!

Our above displayed region indices clearly indicate where the gains are coming from. The historically most traded Islay whiskies gained 4,5%, those from the Lowlands 4,8% and the most traded Speyside whiskies gained a staggering 5,9% within a single round of auctions. This separates our Islay and Speyside indices even more from the Highlands. At the same time, the Lowlands fought back against Campbeltown to reclaim place four among these Scotch whisky regions. And then our Japan index increased by 2,2% too and now stands at 799 index points. If you are looking for the best performing whisky market segment of all time, look no further. Since the climax of the Japanese Whisky Boom in 2015, our Japan index doubled yet again!

Value Gainers

When we look at the top value gainers of this month, we see that most of the spots are taken by releases from independent bottlers. The Rosebank 25.40 from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society was last seen on auctions in April 2013. Back then it sold for 150 Euros, whereas now the price was 1.150 Euros equalling an increase of almost 700%. An Ardbeg 15yo (1975) bottled by Samaroli sold for 6.600 Euros realizing an 630% gain since February 2015. The Bowmore 23yo (1982) Cask 85014 from Duncan Taylor fetched 560 Euros too after it was last auctioned back in 2013 for 100 Euros.

While the above mentioned were all gone from the market for a long time, the displayed Inchgower 28yo (1985) Stamps by The Whisky Agency was last traded in January 2020. But that certainly did not keep it from gaining some significant value. The 830 Euros which were paid now equal a 400% increase in value in little more than a year. But the list doesn’t stop here. Also from The Whisky Exchange, there is this Glenallachie from 1974 which achieved 900 Euros. And what happened to the Macallan 12yo (1993) Provenance from Douglas McGibbon can probably be best described as an “outlier”. With 2.800 Euros the Macallan 25yo (1954) from Gordon & MacPhail is the most expensive expression in this list. Before this round of auctions, our last price point was 670 Euros and came from August 2013.

Most Traded

Looking at the most traded whiskies of the month, we see many familiar faces and some unexpected ones. On top of this list is the Ardbeg Arrrrrrrdbeg! (Committee Release) which is currently selling for 260 Euros. There is, of course, quite some price variability as we can see in the below chart. But we wouldn’t expect anything else from this sort of release by now. Among these most liquid liquids on the market, there are of course some Macallans too. The Macallan Edition No.3 now stands at 225 Euros on average while the Macallan Edition No.6 is coming in at 185 Euros.

More of a surprise is that the Glenlivet 13yo (2006) The Un-Chillfiltered Collection by Signatory Vintage made it to this list. The 81 bottles sold both at ScotchWhiskyAuctions.com and WhiskyAuctioneer.com mean it is the third most traded whisky of this month. Interestingly, because there came only 612 bottles out of cask 901005, so a big chunk of that was auctioned off now. And last but not least, the most expensive heavily traded whisky is the Macallan Peter Blake Gift Box. The 78 prices averaged to 2.900 Euros per bottle.

It's matured in sherry casks and chosen to be more fully flavoured than the Gold but more restrained than the Sienna. A great example of what Macallan can do with good-quality oak.

The UK’s Salcombe Distilling Co. has recently brought its two flagship products — both gin — to the U.S. for the first time. In addition to its product quality claims, the distillery notes that it is one of the world’s only distilleries directly accessible by boat.

Let’s dig in and see how these acquit themselves.

Salcombe Gin Rose Sainte Marie – A pink gin, meant to emulate the qualities of dry rose wine from Provence. The color is natural, provided by “unsweetened red fruits.” Botanicals include Macedonian juniper, angelica root, fresh strawberries, orange blossom, rose petals, fresh lemon, orange peel, lemon verbena, and pink peppercorns — and three unstated additions. Pink or no, any color is barely perceptible, and it’s not particularly pink. The gin is however very floral on the nose, the rose and orange blossoms doing the heavy lifting, though a gentle earthiness runs underneath it all. The palate is both floral and fruity, and while juniper is present, it never comes close to dominating or providing much of an herbal kick. Lemon and spice build toward the finish, with a gentle sweetness and a potpourri note lingering. This would pair well with a mixer like tonic, and it sips nicely solo — much like a Provence rose, indeed. That said, it’s probably not well structured for a martini. (Alas, my sample was too small for broad experimentation.) 82.8 proof. A- / $40 [BUY IT NOW FROM CASKERS]

The Label Makers redesign for Royal Mash vodka

Premium vintage vodka brand Royal Mash is sporting a new look on its bottles following a redesign by The Label Makers.

Launched in 2020, Royal Mash is produced using Jersey potatoes and is distilled in bespoke 200-litre copper pot stills.

The brand's owners, Peter Le Fol du Taillis and Rachel de Caen, tasked The Label Makers with creating a label that spoke to the brand's artisinal character. At the centre of the new label - designed by Kirsty Holton at Manchester-based Sip Studio - is the Le Fol family crest, reproduced in royal blue hot foil and as an enlarged embossed image.

The labels were printed at 1,200dpi using a water-resistant felt-marked FSC-accredited paper for 5cl, 20cl and 70/75cl bottle formats for the UK and export markets.

Rachel de Caen said: "We absolutely love the labels. This is the first time that we have worked with The Label Makers following a glowing recommendation. We adore what Kevin and the team do - they were professional and flexible in their dealings with us, taking time to fully explain the label production process."

Anyone Know What’s in the Adonis?

Bartender Adam Bernbach loves the Adonis cocktail. The pre-Prohibition mixture of sherry, sweet vermouth and bitters has been his favorite drink since the late aughts, when he spent a lot of time digging around for lost minor-classic cocktails that he could serve to his guests. Since then, he has spent many hours whipping up various renditions of the drink, experimenting with various combinations of different sherries and vermouths.

That devotion notwithstanding, Bernbach rarely orders the drink, except when at bars he trusts and frequents regularly. Why? Because everybody makes the drink with fino sherry.

“The Adonis made with oxidative sherry is waaaaay tastier than one made with the flor sherry,” he declares, defining oxidative sherry as dry sherries that spend at least some time aging with exposure to oxygen after the flor has died off (including amontillado and palo cortado styles), or have never aged under flor at all (such as oloroso). By contrast, fino and manzanilla (a type of fino made in the town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda) are aged entirely under flor, a layer of yeast that consumes sugar and alcohol, and are typified by their bracing salinity and dryness. Oxidative sherries, which have been exposed to oxygen, are darker in color and are characterized by a nutty, spicy flavor, which Bernbach believes brings much more to the mixing glass. And yet, nearly every online recipe for the Adonis seems to call for fino or manzanilla. When did those two styles become the de facto companion to sweet vermouth in the Adonis?

It’s a good question. Historical recipes for the Adonis—which was invented in 1884 and named after an early Broadway musical—do not specify what type of sherry wine should be used in the cocktail. They simply call for “sherry” or “dry sherry.” And, since the Adonis was all but forgotten during the latter half of the 20th century, that meant modern mixologists had to do some guesswork when they revived the drink in the aughts. Most, it turned out, guessed that the right sherry for the Adonis was fino.

Guinness marks hospitality reopening with new campaign

To coincide with the reopening of indoor hospitality in the UK, Guinness has launched a new advertising campaign featuring classic song 'Always On My Mind' to celebrate the milestone.

Its #LooksLikeGuinness campaign takes inspiration from the common addage experience of seeing things we miss everywhere we look. Launched on 13 May, the campaign is centred around a 40-second film featuring a series of blac and white objects, including socks and a bollard, before revealing the image behind these fascimiles: a pint of Guinness.

The campaign will run on national television in the UK, alongside online, on-demand video, OOH and print. People are also invited to show their support on social media by sharing images of their own lookalike pint with the hashtag #LooksLikeGuinness.

This new campaig follows a £30 million support pledge from Guinness to help UK hospitality businesses through the Covid-19 pandemic via its Raising the Bar programme.

Neil Shah, head of Guinness GB, said: "The past year has been tough for the hospitality industry, so we want to do all that we can to make sure that the opening week of indoor hospitality is as successful as it can be.

An independent Scottish distillery in Dumfries and Galloway has listed on Airbnb for a limited time this summer, inviting guests to become a distiller for a dayDuring the immersive two night stay, guests will shadow Annandale’s expert distillery team and sleep in cottages next to the distillery siteThe stay is available only on Airbnb as part of a wider campaign to champion tourism in the Scottish Lowlands and support local businesses

To celebrate Scottish Whisky Month, Annandale Distillery, an independent whisky distillery in the south of Scotland, is opening its doors to whisky fans and offering an opportunity to go behind the scenes and become a distiller for a day. The stay is available only on Airbnb as part of a new campaign to encourage people to visit the Scottish Lowlands.

The two night stay, which is being made available to members of the public for a limited time this summer, offers guests the chance to sleep in cottages next to the distillery site, get ‘hands on’ and learn the fundamentals of whisky distilling.

Guests will get to participate in each stage of the process from meeting the malt delivery, to milling and mashing the barley, fermentation, firing up the stills and filling the casks. They’ll also be taken for a whisky tasting and evening meal at The Globe Inn, Dumfries. The Globe Inn is an historic pub dating back to 1610 and once frequented by Robert Burns, with two chefs with Michelin Star experience at the helm. Each guest will check out from their stay with a bottle of Annandale’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky and armed with their newfound knowledge about the work and dedication that goes into making it.

Introduced in 2010, after cask strength versions in 2004 and 2005, this is the first officially-bottled Caol Ila 25yo to be bottled at 43%. It’s nice to see growing recognition for this excellent distillery, and this is a very welcome addition to the official range, with a rich, gentle mouthfeel and restrained, coal-esque phenols.

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, experiences Chaos… Name-wise this is very apt considering what North Star Spirits already bottled with Spica, Vega and Sirius. All of them are references to the galaxy. Chaos was, after all, what came after the Big Bang. In this case it’s a whisky composed with three casks of Caol Ila. Two PX hogsheads that were put to sleep in 2010 and a refill hogshead that was filled in 2009. After vatting they yielded no less than 1.200 bottles of single malt at 50%.

The inherent challenge for any non-alcoholic beverage producer trying to win over a part of the booming spirit-free market is setting the right expectations; are you offering a non-alcoholic replacement for a specific cocktail or spirit, or offering any alternative to the standard seltzer/lime option. The former is a bit of a Quixotic pursuit (so far). The latter provides a more forgiving and flexible bar (no pun intended). But there will be expectations nonetheless.

Which brings us to the review of Mingle Mocktails and the question of “Why would someone choose Mingle Sparkling Mocktails over sparkling water or seltzer?” In their own words:

Have you ever spent an evening at an event drinking sparkling water in a clunky glass with a big red straw? I have, and it wasn’t fun, especially when people kept asking why I wasn’t drinking! Sparkling water is hydrating but it is tasteless, does not look festive or special, and it really gets boring over the course of an event when other individuals are drinking cocktails and wine. Mingle is for those who want to hold an elegant cocktail glass that not only looks nice, but also tastes delightful and refreshing.

I tried the company’s Blackberry Hibiscus Bellini and it certainly does look pretty and festive in a flute with which to mingle about at a party. It has a pleasant enough berry botanical flavor. But other than that, I was never sure what I was drinking and why, since this is not reminiscent of a bellini nor was it very sparkling. Drinking it neat and chilled as a standalone cocktail feels neither here nor there — low fizz and neither sweet nor fruity enough to mimic fruit-forward cocktails, while being too sweet to pass as drier spirit-forward ones. It does better as a mixer base where you load up on the flavors and texture you’re really chasing after, such as a lime, seltzer, fruit, more syrup (really, a little bit of anything would help.) And yes, adding champagne does make for a nicer approximation of a bellini.

“Fruitless” would not be an adjective best describing Firestone Walker. A count has yet to be tallied, but if I were to place a wager, Firestone would be one of the most frequently covered beer brands on this site. Last month, Drew reviewed the Firestone Walker XXIV Anniversary Ale, and in March Chris reviewed the 805 Cerveza — plus four other brews. April Ales bring May IPAs, specifically four of them in a variety 12 pack. (We’ll skip Mind Haze, which Chris already covered separately.) Let’s skip the awful dad jokes and get hoppin’.

Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion IPA Series No. 18 – Brewed with all New Zealand hops, there’s a consistent theme of white grape running from nose to finish. Pine and tropical fruit notes take center stage on the nose, and the malt/hops influence drives things on the palate. Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA – Lots of tropical fruit on the nose here, with a bit of spice and honey, but nothing attempting to dominate. The palate is quite malt-heavy with a wave of pine resin and bitter hops towards the end. It’s a well balanced west coast IPA that never lets its guard down. And the kick up in abv is a most welcome one. 7.0% abv. A-

Smoke Wagon is the It Bourbon brand of the moment. It hails from Las Vegas’s Nevada H&C Distilling Co., and while its four expressions are all sourced stock from MGP, consumers have taken a shine to them all the same.

In this review we look at Smoke Wagon Small Batch, a high rye bourbon which was first released in 2016. According to the company, it is the product of blending a young bourbon with an older vintage bourbon to meld the mouthfeel from the old with the bold spiciness of the young.

I tasted the whiskey multiple times from a fresh bottle as well as several days later. Let’s get to it.

The initial nose is heady with raw wild clove honey and a pop of crisp sweet apple. Over time a nice tawny Port aroma comes forward. There is surprisingly very little heat on the nose even at 100 proof. You almost have to hunt for any burn with a mighty whiff.

THE SOCIETY HAS GOLD RUSH AT SAN FRANCISCO WORLD SPIRITS COMPETITON 

All whiskies entered by the SMWS took either Double Gold or Gold at prestigious awards

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) have continued their annual success at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition by taking home a ‘Best in show’ award along with a host of ‘Double Gold’ and ‘Gold’ awards.

The Society took home the coveted top award for their bottle 46.104 Turn Me Inside Out as well as a range of other ‘Double Gold’ medals for G7.18 A Colourful Oldie and 112.75 Queen of Tarts.

There was also ‘Gold’ accreditation at the 2021 awards for casks 112.74 A Preternatural Good-Striker and 35.264 Midnight Marmalade, overall recognising the consistently outstanding quality of their whiskies across the board.
