Review: The Non-Alcoholic Beers of Grüvi (2021)

Review: The Non-Alcoholic Beers of Grüvi (2021)
Grüvi Golden Lager

Taking a break from all your favorites? Off alcohol for good? Not a problem. Grüvi is here to sort things out and provide a range of non-alcohol beerternatives. Chris reviewed a few Gruvi offerings last year; now we’re back with more of the lineup, some of which has been revamped and reformulated.

A passage from the brewery’s mission statement reads as follows:

“We truly believe in a world where we don’t always feel inclined to drink in a social setting, and a world where everyone can feel comfortable, regardless of what’s in their cup… While alcohol remains so pervasive in our society, we’ve challenged ourselves to create a brand that breaks this cycle. Grüvi was created to dispel the common notion that non-alcoholic beer tastes, well, not great. We saw a desperate need for innovation in the space, and we are here to prove that you can have it all. Enjoy a tasty, healthy brew, and take your chance to live in the moment, alcohol free.”

A noble sentiment, and truly the correct one when starting a project like this. But as always, the most important thing: Let’s see how they taste.

New spirit drink brand Luxlo targeting 'mid-proof' market

New spirit drink brand Luxlo targeting 'mid-proof' market

A new brand targeting the growing 'mid-proof' section of the beverage alcohol market has launched in the UK.

Luxlo is a lower-ABV, lower-calorie, sugar-free spirit targeted towards gin fans who want to explore lower-strength drinking options.

Each of the flavours in the range - Ginny, Blood Orange, Pomegranate & Raspberry, and Passion Fruit - are 20% ABV and contain 28kcal per 25ml serve. Luxlo says its products are designed for drinkers "who want a healthier kind of fun".

Luxlo founder Steve Adams said he devised the concept after struggling to find lower-ABV drinking options while on a drive to lose weight and get healthier.

"After being unable to find a mid-proof drink that wasn't too sweet or overpowering in terms of flavour, I decided to create a spirit for the mindful drinker who wants to drink less but drink better," he said.

New beer subscription serves saving short-dated stock

New beer subscription serves saving short-dated stock

A new subscription service is attempting to minimise waste in the brewing industry, serving beer from big-name brewers that is nearing its best-before date.

Stock'd Up has partnered with producers including San Miguel, Budweiser, Stella Artois, Red Stripe, Guinness and Strongbow to supply subscribers with short-dated, slow-moving or damaged stock - which would otherwise be wasted - at significantly discounted prices.

The company says it is 'on a mission to revolutionise the UK's outdated beer industry and never let a good beer go to waste'. It quotes from the Carlsberg sustainability report 2020, which estimated that, of the 200 billion litres of beer produced globally each year, 2.1-6.4 per cent goes to waste.

This figure is compounded by stock thrown out by retailers, wholesalers and on-trade venues that cannot sell purchased beer before its sell-by date, Stock'd Up says.

All the Ways to Pineapple Your Daiquiri

The sweet-tart union of rum, lime and sugar has been riffed on for almost as long as the Cuban-born drink has existed. Since its invention in the late 19th century, the original shaken Daiquiri has spawned a seemingly endless line of successors. First appearing in the 1920s, the Daiquiri No. 2 includes orange Curaçao and orange juice, while the No. 3, more commonly known as the Hemingway Daiquiri, gets an added dose of grapefruit and maraschino liqueur in place of simple syrup. Since then, nearly every fruit on the color spectrum has entered the picture—though the juicy, tart nature of pineapple is especially apt for the three-ingredient rum sour. Whether you choose to simply juice the fruit, muddle it or turn it into a shrub, here are three ways to make the pineapple Daiquiri your own.

Pineapple Juice

For a straightforward and undoctored approach, the quickest path to pure pineapple flavor is to juice it. In Dutch Kills’ Pineapple Daiquiri, simplicity reigns supreme. An added ounce of pineapple juice allows its fruity, tropical essence to shine without shouting over other flavors. The best part is, you can use the leftover pulp to make a shrub (see below).

Pineapple Slices (and a Shrub)

Forgoing juice entirely, muddling a few slices of ripe pineapple with dry sugar instead of syrup extracts concentrated flavor without further dilution—or bulky equipment. In his Pino Frio, served over shaved ice, Paul McGee also adds pineapple shrub to the muddling mix for a more pronounced fruitiness. Steeped with warming spices like cinnamon, star anise and green cardamom, the blend provides “an extra layer of flavor and acidity and really helps tie everything together,” says McGee. Of course, store-bought shrub is a fine substitution to boost the freshly muddled pineapple slices.

Pineapple Cordial

To stretch the shelf life of your pineapple, turn it into a cordial that you can keep on hand for several weeks. Fresh juice combined with both cane and white sugar over heat will form a fruity syrup, but after a longer, thirty-minute simmer, new flavors emerge. The result is a thicker, golden cordial that imparts all of pineapple’s lushness with the warmth and richness of toasty caramelized notes. In Alec Bale’s Rainmaker, a simple Daiquiri variation, it’s the sweetener of choice to complement a splash of Bénédictine.

Welsh gin distillery bought out by leisure group

Welsh gin distillery bought out by leisure group

A young Welsh gin distillery is set for expansion after a buy-out by the company behind its historic home.

The Leekes Retail and Leisure Group - owners of Leekes, the Vale Resort and Hensol Castle - have become the sole owners of the Hensol Castle Distillery, which is located in the 17th-century building's cellars.

The distillery started production in spring 2019 and has so far launched two on-trade ranges, Benjamin Hall gin and vodka and Crawshay gin, as well as the Trulo reduced-calorie liqueur range which proved a hit during the UK's coronavirus lockdowns.

Hensol Castle Distillery's new managing director, Christopher Leeke, said: "These are exciting times for the distillery. Our contract bottling division is extremely busy with new enquiries arriving weekly, while our own brands are gaining in popularity via retail outlets throughout the UK, particularly our exciting market defining Trulo range.

"The 'ginaissance' shows no signs of abating, as it continues to be a popular tipple among us Brits. According to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, 75 million bottles of gin were sold in 2020, 10 million extra bottles compared to the same period in 2019."

New! The Singleton of Dufftown 54 Year Old…at The Whisky Shop – Scotch Whisky News

May 14th, 2021

New Release: The Singleton of Dufftown 54 Year Old

The Paragon of Time series showcases the oldest and rarest expressions ever released by The Singleton of Dufftown. The much anticipated second release of these expressions is this exceptional 54-year-old whisky – a harmonious collaboration between the skilled craftsmanship of the past and the current modern finishing processes of today. The resulting liquid is a layered, balanced and decadently rich single malt. This is a time capsule through the art of whisky making and one to be appreciated and savoured by any whisky lover.

The Singleton 54 Year Old has spent over half a decade in European oak barrels since its creation in 1966, before being treated to an extra maturation in a single Pedro Ximénez-seasoned cask to finish. Bottled at 44.1% ABV and limited to only 235 bottles, it is extremely rare to find any whisky of this age – a true collectors item.

Pre-order today to add this remarkable release to your collection!

Nose: There is a top-note of rich red wine, mellow and dry overall, leading to maraschino cherries and wax furniture polish beneath. A balanced light bitterness emerges through the sweet fruit, while a drop of water introduces aromas of mint toffee.

Compass Box “Flaming Heart” Sixth Limited Edition Blended Malt Whisky at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Compass Box “Flaming Heart” Sixth Limited Edition Blended Malt Whisky at K&L California – Scotch Whisky News

Compass Box “Flaming Heart” Sixth Limited Edition Blended Malt Whisky (700ml) ($129.99)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: “Inspired by a rock song by M. Ward, this is a blend of single malts, plus peated Islay whiskey. The original limited edition was released in 2006; this is the sixth release, debuting in the U.S. in September 2018. Overall, this is a soft sipper for those who love peat. Look for a straw hue and lightly smoky scent with a whiff of sea breeze. The velvety palate mingles peat smoke with lemon cream and vanilla, lingering into a gentle fade accented by black pepper. (KN)” (12/2019)

94 points Whisky Advocate: “Refined elegant smoke, quayside ropes, liniment oil, waxed lemon, cake mix, ripe peach, and a buoyant maltiness, as Flaming Heart roars back with a vengeance. After the controversy surrounding the 15th Anniversary edition, this time it’s all about the whisky. Sweet tangy orange, bitter peel oils, dark chocolate, clove, peppercorn, and nutmeg glide into menthol, spice, beeswax, and espresso on the finish. Solid gold: this is what they do best. *Editors’ Choice* (JM, Winter 2018)”

K&L Notes: This is the sixth release from 2018 but bottled in 700ml bottles consolidated from other markets outside the U.S. Compass Box’s well-loved, limited-edition peater is back in stock thanks to the change in U.S. law that allows us to sell 700ml bottles. The sixth edition has reintroduced a subtle sherry-cask character. First released in 2006, the Flaming Heart was the first whisky to combine the robust flavors of Islay peated malt with the complex spice of new French oak. Compass Box is the leading bespoke blender in the U.K. They’re refining and redefining the often-maligned category through innovative use of ultra-high-quality malt and thoughtful barrel selection and management. They’re also about as transparent as the law allows with their blends. In this case, we have: 39% refill bourbon barrels from Caol Ila, 29% refill hoggies from Deanston, 11% re-charred hoggies and 6% refill hoggies from Clynelish, and finally 15% Custom French/first-fill Sherry/refill American oak with a blend of Highland malts (these vattings consist of whiskies from Clynelish, Dailuaine, Teaninich, Benrinnes, Glen Ord, and Allt A Bhainne). It’s a complicated recipe that exemplifies the powerful yet balanced nature that has become so renowned with Flaming Heart.
