IRONTON DISTILLERY ANNOUNCES NEW WHISKEY

RiNo, Denver, CO — Ironton Distillery & Crafthouse is releasing a new limited edition whiskey starting June 19th. Switchback Single Malt is A Whiskey Made for Adventures. The lightweight, durable aluminum bottle is easy to toss in with any outdoor gear and take along into the backcountry. Once the whiskey has been enjoyed, the bottle can be refilled and used again as a water bottle.

Switchback Single Malt is made of 100% malted barley. It’s distilled and aged at Ironton’s RiNo distillery by head distiller, Laura Walters. On the nose, there’s notes of cantaloupe, stone fruit, cinnamon and caramel. On the palate, it’s sweet, bright, and grassy with a light mouthfeel and defined finish.

6 O’Clock Gin is produced in Bristol, UK, drawing its name from the family tradition of the founders of the company to enjoy a gin and tonic every day at, you guessed it, 6 pm. Although new to the United States, it has been building momentum in the UK for over a decade. Today we look at both the standard bottling and a ready-to-drink G&T made with the gin.

6 O’Clock London Dry Gin – The London Dry moniker fits the gin’s profile, using mostly familiar gin botanicals in its makeup: juniper, orris root, winter savory, angelica, orange peel, coriander seed, and elderflower, all of which are nicely integrated in the final product. On the nose, orange peel comes forward most boldly, followed by pine and pepper notes from the juniper. Taking a sip, orange peel and juniper again come to the fore, but coriander and elderflower make nice showings as well, and the angelica provides a pleasant, bracing bitterness. This is certainly a London Dry Gin, but it is a really nice example of one, and the slightly higher proof helps the flavors stand out. I tried it in a martini, and it was perfectly fine, but some of the lovely, well-integrated flavors of the gin became muted and didn’t really shine with the inclusion of vermouth. This gin was designed to go with tonic, and, not surprisingly, the two go together very nicely. 86 proof. A- / $35 [BUY IT NOW FROM DRIZLY]

6 O’Clock London Dry Gin & Tonic – Of the ready-to-drink gin and tonics I have tried lately, this is probably the best. It genuinely tastes like the gin it’s made with plus a quality tonic. Tasted blind, I would be hard pressed to guess this wasn’t mixed by hand. I don’t recommend drinking it straight out of the can, because the G&T is quite bubbly, and the fizz settles down when poured over ice. The orange peel, juniper, and coriander that appear in the gin can all be enjoyed in the G&T, along with a light sweetness and a gentle, pleasant, quinine bitterness. If I were being overly picky, I would say that the sweetness is a touch heavy for a mainstream audience, but some drinkers may find this to be a plus. 7% abv. A / $39 for a 12 pack of 200 ml cans

First-Growths and Bitcoin: Cryptocurrency Enters the Fine Wine Chat

When Louis de Bonnecaze started diving into digital currencies in 2015, he saw a unique opportunity for the fine wine industry. Three years later, the CEO of BTC Wine, a Bordeaux-based wine retailer, became one of the first to accept cryptocurrencies, or “crypto,” as payment for prestigious French wines.

"I thought it was a good idea to use crypto as payment because it is fast, secure and convenient," de Bonnecaze told Wine Spectator. "People want to spend the virtual currency and change it to a tangible asset, and buying fine wines can be a solution."

In the past few years, wine auction houses and retailers have increasingly accepted digital tokens such as Bitcoin in the wine world, but many are still hesitant about virtual currencies—decentralized, digital money not issued by a government.

Acker, a 200-year-old wine merchant that saw record-breaking auction sales in 2020, recently announced that it will be accepting digital tokens for auction and retail purchases via BitPay, a payment service provider that helps convert digital currency to cash for merchants. The accepted tokens include Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Dogecoin, PAX (Paxos Standard Token), Gemini Dollar and BUSD (Binance USD).

Acker president John Kapon says it felt like the right time to provide additional payment options that have become popular among Acker's network of wine lovers. "It is clear that there has been significant wealth created by cryptocurrency, and we feel strongly that people already investing and transacting in cryptocurrencies will also be receptive to an alternative asset class like wine, which has also performed exceptionally over time," Kapon said.

For Josh Harris, the G&T Shouldn’t Be Fussy

If there’s one thing Josh Harris wants you to know, it’s that his new bar shouldn’t be confused for his old one. And that’s just fine with him.

Harris’s landmark cocktail destination in San Francisco’s Mission District had been a perennial on “best bars” lists since it opened in 2013, in large part for its ability to recast everything about itself on a semi-annual basis, finding inspiration everywhere from Pantone paint chips to vinyl 45s to street art. No wonder guests felt the urge to return, over and over again, to see what a kitschy Dr. Seuss theme might mean for the high-concept drinks, food and even accoutrements like coasters and the menu itself.

But when the pandemic necessitated another re-imagining, it was a stab at survival. Like most venues, the bar was prohibited from offering indoor service. The pivot: opening an entirely new concept on the sidewalk outside. That took the form of a takeaway stand serving up simple food—hot dogs, french fries—and elevated, well-executed highballs, ranging from “classic” (G&T) to “oddball” (manzanilla sherry and Cel-Ray celery soda)—ones that wouldn’t have been out of place on the original bar’s menu, now in to-go form,

The Botanist & Tonic, for example, served in a soda fountain–style cup with a compostable straw, is “delicious, tart, dry and bubbly,” and made with care, down to the lime wedge that echoes how the drink is built at the original cocktail bar. “There has always been a highball section” on the bar menu, Harris notes, so it was a natural choice to translate it for the new set-up.

Yet the strategy presented a particular challenge: Harris was concerned about confusing guests expecting the original bar’s signature elaborate experience. So the team leaned into distinguishing the takeaway business as a separate concept with its own identity, repainting the exterior of the building, punching out a hole in the door, bringing in a new artist so the menu had a different, cartoon-casual aesthetic.

In addition to American whiskey and bourbon (one of which we just reviewed here), Indiana’s Spirits of French Lick also focuses on brandy and botanical spirits, including Indiana’s first commercial absinthe and a unique Calvados-style apple brandy. We received samples of each for review. Thoughts follow.

Spirits of French Lick Absinthe Le Bleu (2021) – Last reviewed in 2019. This absinthe is produced from a neutral grain base that receives an infusion of macerated botanicals inside French Lick’s pot still, named Sophia, while the remaining botanicals are added via a gin basket over the course of a very slow distillation. Thirteen different botanicals are used, including wormwood, fennel, and anise. The nose is deep and complex, built squarely on a bright, refreshing licorice note but accented by an array of other grassy and floral elements. There’s a unique creaminess underneath it all, almost like saltwater taffy. At such a high proof, the flavors hit the palate like a punch in the face, with a blast of earthy and bitter wormwood followed by a cascade of muddled mint, whole spices, and green and black teas. The underlying sweetness is somewhat distracting, but the creamy body helps to cut through it a bit. The finish is long with notes of dark licorice, tea leaves, and rock candy. A surefire cocktail enhancer, but a very little will go a long way there. 120 proof. A- / $40

Spirits of French Lick Old Clifty Hoosier Apple Brandy – Named for a 19th century Indiana distillery famous for producing 20,000 gallons of apple brandy a year, French Lick’s fruit brandy is distilled from a mash of fresh-pressed Michigan apple juice and aged for two years in re-charred red wine barrels (#2 char level) in their non-climate-controlled “chai” warehouse. The nose is almost savory, showcasing rich, toasty notes of pie spice and oatmeal cookies. The fruit, what there is of it in the aroma, is baked deep into a buttery pie. The palate is considerably brighter than the nose suggests, with a bit of lumberyard and notes of fresh applesauce and cinnamon sugar. It’s all rather light and thins out considerably heading into the finish, leaving a lingering trace of stewed orchard fruit and some latent warmth. 90 proof. B / $55

New Poll Shows Florida Voters Overwhelmingly Support the Seminole Gaming Compact

“Believe Improving Florida’s Economy is State’s Top Priority”

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, May 11, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A new poll commissioned by the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA), in cooperation with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, shows that likely Florida voters overwhelmingly support the new Gaming Compact by more than 3:1, with 62 percent in favor and only 17 percent opposed, as it nears approval by the Florida Legislature in a Special Session beginning Monday, May 17.

Recently signed by Governor Ron DeSantis and Seminole Tribe of Florida Chairman Marcellus Osceola Jr., the new Gaming Compact is guaranteed to bring $2.5 billion in revenue sharing dollars to the State of Florida in its first five years and billions more in future years.

“The Compact will not just benefit the Seminole Tribe and Florida’s state revenue, it will bring a much-needed boost in Florida tourism – Florida’s economic engine – which recorded its lowest year in more than a decade in 2020, and it will also bring thousands of jobs for Florida’s hospitality industry,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of FRLA. “We believe that the new casino games will not conflict with Florida’s family-friendly image, which is especially important in Central Florida, as the new casino table games are limited to Seminole Reservations where casino gaming already takes place. Florida’s tourism and hospitality industry is working to rebuild after a devastating year, and we strongly support this Gaming Compact and our friends in the Seminole Tribe who have continued to demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of our great state.”
Since the beginning of COVID, more than 934,000 of Florida’s 1.5 million hospitality workers were furloughed or laid off. More than 10,000 restaurants closed, and hotels have shuttered. Many hotels still remain on the brink of closure as business travel remains down more than 85 percent. The new Compact will bring jobs and provide significant economic impact to help benefit the hospitality and tourism industry as we try to rebuild and recover from 2020.

Other key findings in the poll:
• 73 percent of respondents said they were more likely to support the Compact when they learned that profits generated by the Seminole Tribe are invested back into the state by creating thousands of jobs and billions more in economic impact;

• Voters also indicated by more than a 2:1 margin that they were now more likely to re-elect their state legislator if he or she votes to approve the compact, with 46 percent saying it would be more likely, 20 percent less likely, and 33 percent unsure;

O-I unveils new collection of premium spirits bottles

Glass maker O-I has launched a collection of premium glass spirits bottles aimed at European consumers.

The Contemporary Collection's first three bottle shapes - the Lux, Attenua and Noble - are inspired by popular spirits bottle shapes from around the world. Each design comes in both a thick base and a more eco-friendly lightweight version (up to 20 per cent lighter than its thick base counterpart) and with a choice of cork mouth or screw cap finishes.

The whole range is made with regular flint, which has a higher proportion of recycled content than the extra or cosmetic flint glass commonly used for premium spirits. 

The bottles have been designed with similar diameters for fillers to change between bottles with a minimum of change parts and are also optimised for high-speed filling lines. Both the lightweight and thick base versions come wiht a push-up bottom - shown to be a preference particularly among UK premium spirits consumers - and a slightly depressed label panel for protection during transit.

The range was launched at the Rethinking Spirits Packaging - Sustainable Premium webinar on 11 May, hosted by O-I and Packaging Innovations. O-I already has plans to expand the range to include further designs, size options from 50ml to 1 litre and a variety of colour options.

Funding caps off year of major milestones for the company’s patented Nematode Pheromone Crop Biocontrol

DAVIS, CA, UNITED STATES, May 11, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Pheronym, a bio-agtech pest management company, has announced it has closed $242,000 in seed funding led by the Sacramento Angels. Other funders in the oversubscribed round included regional business leaders, agtech industry leaders and growers, including Dr. Pam Marrone, Monte Bottens and Mark Haney. Since 2017, the company has secured nearly $900,000 in grants. We’re almost two decades now into the so-called “bourbon boom,” and Van Winkle bourbons, bottles largely responsible for getting us to this frenzied state of obsession, are still widely adored and coveted. As we’ve discussed in recent reviews, the fabled “Pappy” releases are not always life changing pours. While the 15-year has remained a rather consistent favorite of our editorial staff, the 20- and 23-year expressions have bounced between exceptional and just OK over the years. The runt of the litter, Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Years Old, is another solid offering that’s always the most affordable (never mind the exorbitant secondary markups), and frequently the most available, of the lineup, if we can even use that word when talking about these prized whiskeys.

Van Winkle Special Reserve Lot “B” should also fall into the category of “Pappy you might actually see on a shelf.” Actually, of late it seems there’s even more of the 12 year old Lot “B” getting released each fall than the 10 year old. So where does this Winkle fit in the family? Like all of its other siblings, it is made from the Weller wheated mashbill distilled by Buffalo Trace, but its pre-Trace history is much more complicated. This release actually predates the arrival of the Pappy bourbons, as Julian Van Winkle, Pappy’s grandson and bearer of the Pappy flame, introduced it in the early 1990s with plans to release several different “lots” of his sourced stock (not all of which was his father’s Stitzel-Weller juice). Lot “B” seemed to stick with consumers, so the name never changed, although it’s now pulled from the same stock as the other Pappys. It’s aged at least 12 years. On paper, it doesn’t look much different than Weller 12 Years Old, except for the very slight increase in proof. Let’s see for ourselves, shall we?

The nose is pretty subdued, even allowing for time in the glass for it to open up. Classic butterscotch and subtle cinnamon spice emerge along with some burly barrel notes: char and tobacco and damp lumber. The Weller 12 year, by comparison, is a bit bigger and brighter with pronounced citrus and vanilla. Even with the softer nose, the Lot “B” comes across as a bit older, with a deeper and more seasoned wood aroma.

On the palate, Lot “B” is exceptionally balanced and lightly spiced with classic toffee notes, a dusting of nutmeg, and some chewy caramel. The finish is long but subtle with baking spice and a bit of dark cherry. All that balance has come at a price though. While it’s still an enjoyable, if somewhat uneventful bourbon, Weller 12 is more full-flavored with just as much approachability. And it’s cheaper, even by secondary market standards. Just sayin’.
