Your Spring Cocktail’s Secret Weapon

In a year when Instagram has arguably served up more drinks than most in-person bartenders, eye-catching bright colors count. No wonder the snap pea cocktail has become a borderline phenomenon.

Yet, the vibrant green hue is only part of the attraction. Bartenders laud the legume’s bright aroma and earthy, vegetal flavor, which pops alongside a range of white spirits, from gin to mezcal. Often, its perky presence in drinks is underscored by fresh herbs or herbaceous liqueurs like Chartreuse or génépy.

“Snap pea lends itself to bright, refreshing cocktails, ” says Shawn Lickliter, bar director for Los Angeles’ farm-to-table restaurant République. “There’s a freshness, a greenness, a sweetness to it that plays generally well.” Compared to pungent radishes or spicy arugula, snap peas offer a “less aggressive” flavor and aroma, he notes. For his Snap Pea spritz, inspired by a snap pea agnolotti on the menu, Lickliter muddles snap peas with Meyer lemon juice for a bright, verdant burst. He then shakes the mixture with gin, herbal génépy and tarragon simple syrup, and tops the drink with prosecco.

Beyond their visual appeal, snap peas offer a comforting familiarity—a flavor almost everyone has experienced in a spring salad or pasta. “It’s one of the first few things that starts to come in in springtime,” says Washington, D.C., bartender Brad Langdon, now bar director for Albi. When he wanted a “cool, spring-y, vegetal Daiquiri variation” for The Dabney Cellar, he turned to snap peas, which were also being used in the restaurant kitchen upstairs.

“Chef was making sauces with sweet peas and snap peas, and I was tasting through a bunch of things,” Langdon recalls. At first, he tried juicing only the peas, but found them “too vegetal.” Adding the waxy pods yielded more flavor and volume—“there’s a decent amount of liquid retained in the pods,” he notes—as well as a “super-bright, lime green color.”

Luxco secures Oddbins listing for whiskey brands

Luxco secures Oddbins listing for whiskey brands

Luxco, the American distiller, supplier and bottler of alcohol products, has secured a UK retail listing for two of its whiskey brands with Oddbins.

Ezra Brookers Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Minor Case Straight Rye Whiskey will be available from 15 Oddbins stores and through its website from May. They are currently the only American whiskey brands stocked by the off-licence chain.

Lux Row Distillers' Ezra Brooks (40% ABV) is a straight Kentucky Bourbon, while Limestone Branch Distillery's Minor Case Rye Whiskey (45% ABV) is distilled using 100 per cent American heartland grains and finished in cream sherry casks.

Greg Mefford, international sales director at Luxco, said: "We have been focusing on growing our presence in the UK market in partnership with our distributor Lightbox Brands and the reception from UK consumers has been exceptional.

"Securing a listing with a highly respected alcohol retailer such as Oddbins, and to be the only American Bourbon and rye brands currently listed, is a fantastic step forward for the business and further builds on our European expansion."

Morrisons to stock Spencer Matthews' CleanCo brand

Morrisons to stock Spencer Matthews' CleanCo brand

Non-alcoholic spirit brand CleanCo - founded by actor-turned-entrepreneur Spencer Matthews - has secured a listing with Morrisons.

Its Clean G, Clean R and Clean V non-alcoholic spirit alternatives will be hitting shelves in 478 stores around the UK from 10 May.

This major retail listing for the brand, launched by Made In Chelsea star Matthews in 2019, will be supported by a new £1 million television advertising campaign that will air between 17 May and 16 June.

It coincides with a decision by the brand to make all of its products non-alcoholic (less than 0.5% ABV), lowering the drinks from the 1.2% ABV strength at which they launched.

Jack Coleclough, spirits buyer manager at Morrisons, said: "No and low-alcohol drinks in particular are growing in popularity, so it makes perfect sense to be introducing CleanCo to our spirits range. We're excited to be offering three products - Clean R, Clean G and Clean V - so that customers can experiment with the various spirits."

Buffalo Trace Distillery Gives Updates on

New Barrel Warehouses

Whiskey quality is consistent in the 10 new warehouses; 3 more warehouses to be added in 2021

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (May 4, 2021) For the last few years, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been hard at work on its $1.2 billion dollar infrastructure investment, some of which includes new barrel warehouses.  At a capacity of 58,800 barrels each, the addition of 10 new warehouses have given this National Historic Landmark Distillery an on-site barrel inventory of over one million aging whiskey barrels.

Starting in the spring of 2018, Buffalo Trace began filling its first new warehouse located on the adjacent 292-acre farm purchased several years ago.  Since then, barrel warehouses AA through JJ are filled.  Buffalo Trace is currently working on Warehouse MM and will continue to add future warehouses of the same size at a rate of one new warehouse every four months, until further notice.

The Harris Journal: Life Takes Time – Scotch Whisky News

May 11th, 2021

With the distillery doors open to the public and our peat fire lit once more we’re delighted to be giving a warm welcome to those who have managed to join us in Tarbert as lockdown eases.

We’re also very proud of all our local health service staff and vaccination volunteers who have ensured such a safe and swift roll-out of inoculations here in the Outer Hebrides.

Every member of our distillery team has now had at least one of their Covid injections and we’re grateful to NHS Western Isles for all their efforts over the last twelve months.

So, as we look ahead to better days our attention is turning to the arrival of The Hearach Single Malt as we get closer to the day we can share our first historic dram with the world.

Review: Graham’s Tawny Port 10 Years Old (2021)

Graham's Tawny Port 10 Years Old (2021)

Christopher Null May 10, 2021

No big changes for Graham’s entry-level 10 year old tawny expression since our last look in 2016; even the packaging remains the same 5 years on. And sure enough, it remains one of my top expressions from Graham’s, particularly considering the price (though it appears to be going up). Notes of plump raisins, dried cherries, cola, tea leaf, and chocolate are all in the mix, and because the sweetness is dialed back, the wine finishes on a silky but never saccharine note, touched just so with notes of licorice and spice.

Polar Blasts Test French Vintners’ Resolve

Polar Blasts Test French Vintners’ Resolve

Anyone thinking that France's vintners had put the risk of frost behind them with the end of April were mistaken. Frigid air from the Arctic swept over France again the first week of May, less than a month after freezing temperatures devastated numerous wine regions. "We had another hit of frost the morning [of May 3]. It was [26° F] in certain sectors—so we're not at the end of it yet," said Thiébault Huber, winegrower in Meursault and president of Burgundy's winegrowers union.

In the Gironde region, the Médoc in Bordeaux and Cognac felt the sting of the most recent frost. "It wasn't that cold, [28° F],” Philippe Abadie, director of business services at the regional Chamber of Agriculture, told Wine Spectator, “but it was cold enough to freeze the vines that didn't freeze the first time."

One frigid wave after another

This was the latest in a series of brutal Arctic blasts that began on April 6 and have inflicted catastrophic damage. Numerous types of crops have been hit, and Minister of Agriculture Julien Denormandie has declared a national disaster.

"In the Gironde, some zones were hit harder than others," said Abadie, "the Graves, Sauternes, the Premier Côtes, Blaye, Bourg, Coutras and the communes along the Dordogne river from the lower part of St.-Emilion to Bergerac. Some have suffered 80 percent losses; in Sauternes and the Graves, some [growers] lost more than 80 percent [of vine buds]."

"Like other French vineyards, Champagne was affected by an eight-night episode of severe frost between April 6 and April 16,” a spokesperson for the Comité Champagne told Wine Spectator. “Overall, it is estimated that 25 to 30 percent of the buds have been destroyed across the appellation. There is strong heterogeneity in the damage depending on the location of the plots, due to local precipitation, the presence or absence of wind or even the early development of the buds."

Review: Firestone Walker Mind Haze IPA

Review: Firestone Walker Mind Haze IPA

Firestone Walker Mind Haze IPA

Christopher Null May 10, 2021

Firestone Walker‘s rendition of a hazy IPA is surprisingly sessionable at just 6.2% abv, but it’s so loaded with flavor you’d never notice. A base of Cheerios kicks things off, with a bold layer of fruit rolling in next: fresh oranges, some pineapple, and — surprisingly — a clear banana note that I never shook all the way to the finish. This beer goes down frightfully easy, gently hoppy despite a huge load of Mandarina, Cascade, Azacca, El Dorado, Mosaic, Chinook, Cashmere, Callista, and Idaho 7 hops, but moderately sweet and citrusy, its finish a delightful reprise of mandarin orange. This one goes down in a hurry.
