Arrogant Bastard Ale six-packs of 16 oz. cans going nationwide

Arrogant Bastard Ale six-packs of 16 oz. cans going nationwide

Media Release:

(Escondido, CA) – Stone Brewing Co. sent out the following announcement regarding its now-personified Arrogant Bastard Ale, now going nationwide in six-packs of 16oz. cans.

***

Ever since I was first unleashed on an unsuspecting public in 1997, I have believed pandering to the lowest common denominator represents the height of tyranny. In my unprecedented and uncompromising celebration of intensity, I openly challenged these commodity beer overloads and their multi-million dollar ad campaigns.

In 2016, I will once again find a way to wreck havoc amongst them on their own turf, in their own preferred method of distribution. The can. Unlike the fizzy yellow facsimiles of beer, while I may be canned—I will never be contained. I am Liquid Arrogance.

Jester King Brewery announces its belated (Cantillon) Zwanze Day set for April 14th

Jester King Brewery announces its belated (Cantillon) Zwanze Day set for April 14th

(Austin, TX) – Jester King Brewery announced the following in its newsletter this week…

—-

We’re very excited to finally announce the date for “2015” Zwanze Day at Jester King — Thursday, April 14th, 2016 from 6pm to 10pm.

If you’re not familiar, Zwanze Day is the time of year when Brasserie Cantillon simultaneously releases a new, very special beer at dozens of locations around the world. 2015 Zwanze Day happened back on September 19, 2015. Although Jester King had the honor of being a location, we postponed 2015 Zwanze Day (with Cantillon’s blessing) until Cantillon could officially be licensed for sale in Texas. Unfortunately, Texas law makes it very hard to get beer from small breweries into our state. The Texas government sends the message that if you’re not prepared to sell at least 1,000 cases of beer per year in the state, you have no business being here.

Fortunately, due to help and good will from Cantillon, Shelton Brothers Importers, Flood Independent Distribution, and Jester King (if we may say so ourselves), Cantillon is now licensed in Texas! We previously wrote last year about our efforts on this front. As we mentioned, we’re using Zwanze Day as a vehicle to raise money for Texas beer law reform and to make it easier for small, out-of-state breweries to enter our state. Half the cost of every ticket ($25) will be donated to the Texas Craft Brewers Guild Legislative Committee and/or Open the Taps. Tickets are $50 and include a 4 oz. pour of 2015 Zwanze (a spontaneously fermented stout), a cheese pairing from Antonellis Cheese Shop, a custom Jester King 2015 Zwanze Day souvenir glass featuring the artwork shown above, and the aforementioned $25 donation. Two-hundred tickets will be available.

Sun King Brewery welcomes new president and co-owner

Sun King Brewery welcomes new president and co-owner

Press Release:

Leadership team continues plans to increase production and distribution, as well as expand community partnership programs statewide

(Indianapolis, IN) – Sun King Brewery, Indianapolis’ largest beer brewer, the second-largest brewer in Indiana and the largest brewer in Indiana that distributes beer exclusively within the state, announced that Robert Whitt, former executive director of White River State Park (WRSP) for more than 11 years, will become Sun King’s president and a co-owner of the brewery. In this role, he will focus on the brewery’s growth and business operations, human resources, finance, safety and legislation. Omar Robinson, co-founder and co-owner, will officially retire in April, yet he will remain a member of the brewery’s board and continue to provide strategic counsel.

“Omar’s entrepreneurial spirit and business experience significantly contributed to driving Sun King’s growth from 0 to 30,000 barrels in a little more than six years, and we will miss having him impart his knowledge and passion here every day at the brewery,” Clay Robinson, co-founder of Sun King, said. “While leadership transitions can admittedly be challenging, we are fortunate to gain Bob on our team. His extensive operations experience, dedication to giving back to Indiana communities and passion for local food and beverages – especially Sun King – make him the perfect fit for this role.”

Whitt and Sun King co-founders Clay Robinson and Dave Colt will continue to foster the company’s significant growth across Indiana through expanded statewide distribution in bars, restaurants, and liquor stores; increased production of Sun King’s high-quality house, seasonal and specialty beers; and continued improvements in its technology, methods and equipment. Recent improvements include the brewery’s new centrifuge, state-of-the-art canning line and expansion of its downtown brewery in order to house new fermentation tanks that will nearly double the brewery’s production capacity.

Shmaltz Circumsession Ale tapping locations beerpulse

Press Release:

(Clifton Park, NY) — Rabbis, lawyers, doctors, accountants, rock stars, studio execs and Jewish orthodontists have countless songs of praise celebrating their crucial and storied roles in our history and communities.

But with a name oh so hard to spell and a delicate job cloaked in controversy, when a Mohel (pron, “moi-el” or “mo’hel”) walks in the room with his sacred ritual instruments soaked in significance and honed with years of handiwork, the adults (and one particular 8-day old male child) could generally use a beer — or several.

Finally after 4,000 years of Jewish tradition from Abraham to Jon Stewart — and for many more world cultures in the fold — the perfect bubbly balm to sooth the Bubbes and the bystanders and sanctify such a precious moment. A new craft beer covenant coming to convert you — for real in 2016: Circum Session Ale®.

Intended to look a lot like our father’s fizzy yellow beers, Circum Session Ale® gives a hand-crafted twist for a more modern angle of flavor for the next generation of the tribe of Better Beer enthusiasts.

Anchor Orange Splash Lager: Anchor Brewing releases first MLB collaboration brew

Anchor Orange Splash Lager: Anchor Brewing releases first MLB collaboration brew
Anchor Orange Splash Lager 12OZ CAN BeerPulse

Press Release:

(San Francisco, CA) – Anchor Brewing Company and the San Francisco Giants announce the limited edition collaboration brew, Orange Splash Lager™ (5.2% ABV), now available in cans.

Baseball and San Francisco have gone hand in hand for more than 100 years. With roots that date back to the California Gold Rush, Anchor has been intrinsically tied to the city and has been enjoyed by Giants fans for decades.

In celebration of a longstanding partnership, Anchor Brewing and the San Francisco Giants are proud to release the first ever Major League Baseball and craft beer collaboration; Orange Splash Lager.

“Anchor Brewing has had a deep connection with the San Francisco Giants for years. As two San Francisco icons with mutual respect and admiration, it was just a matter of time before we brewed an Anchor and Giants collaboration beer. We’re very excited to release the San Francisco Giants inspired craft beer: Orange Splash Lager,” said Anchor Brewmaster Scott Ungermann. “We first introduced Orange Splash Lager in limited quantities on draught in the fall of 2015. This year, we’re introducing the beer in cans! When creating this beer, we wanted to make something as unique as the city’s beloved baseball team. We did this by combining a blend of Pale 2-Row, Caramel, and Patagonia Especial Malts. We hopped the beer generously with Apollo and Bravo hops in the Brewkettle and added a healthy amount of Mandarin Orange juice. We also added orange peels at three different stages of the brewing process and dry-hopped on a citrus-like experimental hop variety. The final result is an orange-zesty, citrusy, thirst-quenching lager with a unique San Francisco twist.”

Flemish Fox Brewery & Craftworks has acquired property in northwest Austin to develop the new brewery, which will produce beer for both Atwater Brewing and Flemish Fox Brewery & Craftworks. The brewery will have up to 27,000 square feet of usable space which will be completely refurbished to create a brewery with a capacity of more than 60,000 barrels per year. The brewery is expected to be in production by the first quarter of 2017.

The three-acre property, located in close proximity to other craft breweries, is expected to become a popular destination for Austin residents and tourists. In addition to the state-of-the art production facility, the brewery will incorporate a spacious tasting room, an outdoor beer garden with an entertainment venue, a retail shop and a museum featuring historic brewing equipment and craft brewing memorabilia. (Irish) Whiskey Wednesday #7

(Irish) Whiskey Wednesday #7
image

I had good intentions ("paving the road to hell," as I like to say) of doing Irish whiskey reviews on the run-up to St. Patrick's Day, but as I've said several times, my health had other ideas. One of the worst colds I can remember laid me and my sniffer low for almost five weeks, and I'm still not completely recovered. But I'm well enough to review whiskeys, so I'm going to go ahead and do the Irish I had lined up, because they tell me that Irish whiskey isn't just about March 17th anymore.

This week it's two from Ciaran Mulgrew's new "The Quiet Man" line, blended and bottled in Derry, Northern Ireland. I talked to him back in January about his whiskeys, which are named for his father, John Mulgrew, who was a "quiet man" behind the bar he tended for 50 years: heard your stories, but kept them to himself. Ciaran's a bit of a quiet man himself when it comes to revealing the source of his whiskeys; Bushmills, given the location of his operation and the 8 year old single malt bottling? Cooley, where they've also done single malt? Neither are selling a lot of whiskey to bottlers. Nothing is confirmed or denied.

I asked Mulgrew what set his whiskeys apart from the growing flood of new entries to the category. "The Quiet Man is matured in first fill bourbon barrels," he said, "which have had bourbon in them but never any other whiskey. Most Irish whiskey and Scotch is matured in bourbon barrels, but the barrels may have had whiskey filled into them four or five times. This reduces the impact of the wood upon the spirit. In addition, the traditional blended variety has a high malt percentage, making it more premium and giving it a smoother finish."

Mulgrew's not a pro; or rather, he wasn't before he released the whiskey last year. "It has been a long time coming, but this is my first entry into the whiskey market." The Quiet Man is being distributed in the U.S. by Luxco, who should be able to supply fresh bourbon barrels. Luxco is supporting the brand with tastings both on and off-premise; keep an eye out for them.

The Quiet Man Blend, 40%
Quick grainy smell as I open and pour. Sweet grain in the glass, along with penny candies, cornmeal, and orange marshmallow. Quite sweet on the tongue, very Irish in character. Light, friendly, no overt oakiness. Sweet but not cloying, with some light golden raisin fruitiness. Pleasant and approachable; maybe a bit too sweet from the bourbon barrels, without corresponding depth, but a good whiskey for introductions and carefree drinking.

The question would be whether to have this, at a common price of about $35 a bottle, or Jameson/Tullamore/Bushmills/Paddy/Powers at anywhere from $7 to $15 less. This seems a bit pricey.

Verdict: Okay

The Quiet Man 8 Year Old Single Malt, 40%
Hoping for a bit more here. The blend, while not labeled for age, is thought to be about 4 years old. Expecting a bit more structure from an 8 year old single malt. Yup, more oak in the nose; nougat, sandalwood. A lot more oak on the tongue, more of the sandalwood, a nice warm cereal character, as well as a pleasantly oily texture. This has a lot more going on, not simply sweet and fun. If I didn't have more tasting to do today, I'd pour another full measure and just enjoy this one.

Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA arrives this week

Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA arrives this week

Press Release:

(Escondido, CA) – The seemingly sinister Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA by Stone Brewing has risen from sources of dark malted barley. Brewed specifically NOT to last, this immensely hopped black IPA refuses to rest until it makes the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs to hopheads in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at select retailers nationwide.

With the balanced support of pleasingly smooth malts, Vic Secret, Ella and (of course!) Galaxy lead the massive hop addition in this predominately Oz system hop profile. When combined and added, the hops produce nuances of dankness and tropical fruit qualities that are evident in the aroma, with a taste that is distinctively hoppy. This devastatingly dark force is out to restore freshness and appreciation to the black IPA subsect in cantinas and lairs across select parts of the known universe.

“Keeping in mind the words of an immensely wise philosopher—‘Do. Or do not. There is no try’—we created a recipe that featured the exact traits we wanted our fans to experience from a black IPA,” said Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “The recipe we landed on really showcases the aromas and flavors of Australian hop varietals, which are balanced beautifully with the delicate back notes of roast and dark malts.”

A groundbreaking mission, the Stone Enjoy By IPA series facilitated a paradigm shift in how Stone and its distribution partners work together to deliver the most devastatingly fresh IPAs on the planet to craft beer enthusiasts. Just as on its light-side counterpart, the “Enjoy By” date sends an overt message to its fresh-seeking fans on the bottle, indicating precisely the date by which the black IPA must be consumed to enjoy maximum freshness. In the unlikely event that any Stone Enjoy By 05.04.16 Black IPA remains on the shelves on May 5, the Revenge of the Fifth will strike in the form of empty shelves and draft lines.

Jester King and Cantillon vs. Texas

I don't normally plug events outside my region, but this one's supporting an excellent cause: beer freedom. Jester King, in Austin, has locked horns with the Texas ABC before, so it's no surprise that when the TABC thwarted their plans to host Cantillon's "Zwanze Day" release event in September of 2015 (the TABC has rules about what beers can be sold in Texas!), they cried "Bullshit!" and let loose the dogs of beer. They won — naturally! — and will be holding their Zwanze Day next month, and proceeds from the event will go to a fund to reform Texas beer laws. Brilliant. I'm so pleased that I copied the whole press release below (okay, partly it was to use that really cool graphic). Well done, Jester King!

Fortunately, due to help and good will from Cantillon, Shelton Brothers ImportersFlood Independent Distribution, and Jester King (if we may say so ourselves), Cantillon is now licensed in Texas!

Guests will also have the first opportunity to purchase Cantillon bottles and draught legally sold in Texas. We expect to have Cantillon Gueuze and Kriek available for purchase on draught, and bottles of Bruocsella Grand Cru, Kriek, and Gueuze available to go. Due to the small number of Cantillon bottles we will be receiving from Shelton Brothers, customers will be limited to purchasing one bottle of Cantillon (either Bruocsella Grand Cru, Kriek, or Gueuze). We’ll have just enough bottles so that every ticket holder can buy one bottle. Also, we will just apply our standard markup to the Cantillon bottles and draught. No price gouging from us.

We’re hosting a lottery for the 200 tickets. To enter, please follow the link below and enter the requested information, including whether you wish to purchase one or two tickets if your name is selected. Lottery entry will close at midnight on Sunday, April 3rd. We’ll then notify lottery winners by the close of business on Monday, April 4th. Lottery winners will have 48 hours to purchase tickets. If tickets aren’t purchased within 48 hours, we’ll randomly select another entrant to offer the tickets.

You must be 21 or older to enter the lottery. One entry per person. Double entries will be eliminated. You must show up with a valid ID that matches the name on the ticket. Tickets are non-transferrable.

Finally, we’ll be announcing a few surprises for Zwanze Day in the coming days, which will include some special beer releases and special guests. We’ll also be allowing a bottle share for ticket holders at Zwanze Day again this year. We’re excited the long wait to have Cantillon in Texas is over and that “2015” Zwanze Day is finally here!
