The Best Snacks to Pair with Cocktails or Beer

One of the most significant problems one can encounter when it comes to the luxurious indulgence in drinks, especially cocktails, beers, and other alcoholic variance, is getting the perfect pairing of food and beverages. 

Whether you're planning for a party or you just want a late-night treat, finding the best combo makes snacking a much more memorable experience. There's really no rocket science analysis to mixing and drinks and snacks. The real trick is to make sure you get the right blend.

The main thing you have to consider is flavoring. Taking a snack whose flavor clashes with that of your drink can ruin it for you. When pairing, it's better to look out for a perfect complement by trying to contrast the flavors.

If your cocktail is a bit sweet, you'll want to water down the taste with a snack that's not too spicy or sweet. Take, for instance, a combination of chocolate cake with a chocolate martini. The mixture is a bit too similar in flavor and can feel quite drab, while a combination of chocolate cake with a dry martini gives a perfect balance. A contrast in the taste is a great way to bring some excitements to your taste buds.

Another interesting combo is sushi and the famous Long Island cocktail. Aside from being a combination of a fantastic cuisine with a spirit-infused cocktail, the sweet and sour flavor balance is guaranteed to give your taste bud a unique experience.

Same as with cocktails, the different brews of beers are compatible with different snacks based on their flavors. For instance, Pilsners go smoothly with high-fat oily fishes and marbled meats. This is because the bitterness of the beer makes for a pleasing contrast with the sweetness of the sauce. Another excellent combination is stouts and caramelized dishes with brown, spicy sauces, or salty foods like oysters.

Alcoholic Creations From Your Instant Pot

Many people may see an Instant Pot as a simple and quick way to whip up a meal. However, there are a variety of different things that you can do with an Instant Pot that you may not have thought of. Chief among these are a few different boozey recipes; as many people have found out, Instant Pots can work wonders when it comes to alcohol-infused recipes. While the majority of us may only be familiar with recipes that involve a bit of wine or some alcohol for flavoring, if you happen to know any cocktail recipes than you may be able to shake up your creations a little bit. With that in mind, there are a few tasty alcohol-based treats that you can whip up in an Instant Pot.

Bourbon Pulled Chicken

While the majority of people will be familiar will pulled pork, not many may be familiar with pulled chicken. However, it can be an incredibly satisfying treat, especially when you use the right kind of sauce. You can serve it on a roll or with some rice, but either way, it can be incredibly delicious. Start by putting thawed chicken breasts into your Instant Pot while they're still raw, and in a separate bowl add bourbon, ketchup, water, soy sauce, and brown sugar in equal parts. You can also add the likes of honey or spices depending on your taste. Pour this mixture over the chicken before cooking for 15 minutes. Then open and shred your chicken, and it's now ready to serve. If you think your sauce is still a little thin, you can always switch to the saute setting and letting it thicken to your preferred consistency.

Limoncello

Limoncello is typically known for being lemon and vodka; however, it can normally take weeks for the lemon taste to infused with the vodka. However, an Instant Pot can do this in about half an hour. Simply cut off the peel while avoiding the white part, as this can add a lot of bitterness to the flavor. Then fill a few canning jars with vodka and add as much of the lemon peel as you want. Place the mixture on the metal rack and turn your Instant Pot on for a 30-minute manual pressure cycle and a full natural release. Afterward, you can add a little bit of syrup to help add a little bit more flavor.

Apple Brandy Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce can be either one of the most loved or hated parts of your Thanksgiving dinner. However, that doesn't mean that you can't get creative with it. With that in mind, you can try adding cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, a bit of cinnamon, and a dash of salt to your Instant Pot. Cook for six minutes before releasing for ten; afterward, stir on saute for a few more minutes until the cranberries break down. This will make your sauce start to thicken, which you should allow until it reaches a texture that you're happy with.

Beer Chili

Beer chili doesn't have an exact recipe, although this helps to add to the fun. To make beer chili, you simply need to make the chili the way you normally would with all of the same ingredients. When it comes to the beer element, it can depend greatly on the amount of chili you're cooking as well as how strong you want the beer flavor to be. It's also worth noting that the vast majority of beers and ales will create different tastes in your chili. Because of that, you should pair your chili with a beer that you think will complement its taste. This also lets you experiment somewhat with the different beers that you find tasty.

Master the Basics

Mastering the basics is a lot less exciting and sexy than implementing the latest mixology technique or trying to get more people in the door with the latest app. But chasing the latest ‘new thing’ is often done at the expense of mastering the basics of running a successful bar/restaurant program. The truth is, this area alone will make the biggest difference for long term customer retention and profitability.

I don’t remember the first time someone ordered a pickle juice chaser from me, but I’m sure I was surprised. I assumed they wanted to listen to Nickleback or had been fishing and caught a stickleback.

No, they wanted to chase a shot of whiskey with a shot of pickle brine. It sounded odd, but I got some from the kitchen.

It’s not weird anymore. We keep pickle juice in a store-and-pour next to the sweet and sour.

2019 Cocktail Trends Coming to a Bar Near You


It’s January, and that means bartenders are (hopefully) catching up on sleep, making (and breaking?) resolutions and recovering from the holidays. But it also means it’s time to look ahead at what’s up-and-coming in the world of craft cocktails.

We asked our Facebook group of hundreds of craft bartenders & cocktail enthusiasts what they are seeing in their local markets. Here’s what they said, plus a few things I’m personally seeing as well:

 

 

Nearly Unanimous: The Focus on Beautiful, Highly Visual Cocktails

The saying, “You eat with your eyes” definitely applies to bars today. In 2018 we saw bars and restaurants embracing the idea of a beautifully garnished cocktail with edible flowers, intricate fruit zest designs hanging on the glass and even using smoke as a presentation piece for the cocktail. One look through Instagram or Facebook and you’ll see this trend is still going strong and likely to continue and strengthen in the year ahead.

Why Choose a Blender According to Needs and Budget

Choose a Blender

A blender is a must-have kitchen appliance in every home. Should you ever need to make a puree of fruits and vegetables or delicious milkshakes, it’s the go-to device. Blenders function differently from juicers which use force to make the juice come out of plants and vegetables, so they’re a step up from juicers as far as raw power is concerned. They’re a step down from food processors in the power department as food processors can handle very labor intensive tasks like mixing the dough.

Even within that middle ground, there’s still a lot of wiggle room. If you are only going to blend small amounts of materials on an infrequent basis, there’s little to no need for the most powerful and largest blender available to consumers. You should consider the needs of your household as well as how often you plan on using the blender when considering how fancy you want to go.

What criteria are you actually using?  Well, I’ll tell you:

Power

Blender power is measured in wattage, while you need not concern yourself with what the numbers themselves actually represent, different amounts of power are better for certain jobs. The occasional milkshake or mixing of soft fruits with yogurt needs a blender that has 600 watts or less as far as power is concerned.

If you frequently blend and add tough materials like ice, frozen fruit, or hardy vegetables, then it’s best to upgrade to a middle of the road blender, perhaps a popular Vitamix blender with a power rating more in the realm of 1000 watts. If you’re really gung-ho about chopping things to bits on a daily basis, 1300 watts or more is what you should be looking for. A 1300 watt blender will turn even the strongest of materials into a pulp in no time flat.
