Blog. Balmoral invites Paul to a whisky tasting

How do I turn this down? I didn’t. I wafted along there looking forward to tasting a few drams, maybe meeting a few known whisky associates. Welcomed in by Fraser (who invited me in the first place), then introduced to G&M drams and a quick nose around to see who/what was here. A nice lassie with Highland Park and Auchentoshan beckoned, so I duly obliged taking a dram of Three Wood Auchentoshan to start the evening off. A nice chat and a dram of HP Origins, a good start. I turned around and Ally fae Tomatin was there, I know him from a few tasting before, good man so he is and offered me anything he had! So I took a slug of Tomatin 1995 (excellent value at £99.99) it was superb by the way. A chat and a promise to return (or was it a threat?), I dondered over to Bunny Heaven man, where there was a dram waiting for me; Ceobanach @ 46.3%, this was savoured and needed another just to be sure, the second was as good as the first. It was just about here Fraser came back for a chat, a good evening, many American guests here having a great time, Fraser introduced me to G&M Private Collection; 4 bottles worth £24 the set – he reckons this is the only bar in UK (the world?) with this set.

Mortlach 1951, 63 year old; Glenlivet 1952, 62 year old; Linkwood 1953, 61 year old; Strathisla 1957, 57 year old. I wished I could have sampled these, but they were not available this evening (will need go back for a private tasting soon), there are no too many of these bottles to be found anywhere, it reminds me of a Dalmore collection, BUT BETTER! After a nibble on some cheeses to refresh my palate I wandered back to Ally for a Cu Bocan 1988, peaty, but no too much so, grand! So what else attracted my taste buds? Raasay distillery were there with a sample or two which hit the spot again, their stills are in, All the way from Tuscany. Something to see here in early 2017. Benromach quenched my thirst also with a nice wee 35 year old.

Beer T-Shirt Club is happy to partner with a Denver brewery for the October shirt.  River North Brewery was opened in 2012 by Matt and Jessica Hess and was originally located in the fast growing River North neighborhood.  In early 2015 they were given a 6-month notice to vacate their prime location to make way for high end luxury condos.  After realizing their best option would be to move out the River North neighborhood, they decided on a space a couple miles away that would give them the necessary room to double their production facility.  This added space for growth was welcome news to the huge following of fans they have in Denver.  And when they opened the new River North brewery in April 2016, it gave them the opportunity to begin a new chapter of their story.

Against the Grain collaboration beers with Three Floyds, Hoof Hearted release on 10/28

Against the Grain collaboration beers with Three Floyds, Hoof Hearted release on 10/28

[Press Release:]

(Louisville, KY) – In September, we decided after years of poking fun at our good friends up north it was time for a handshake and a beer. Together we made our version of a fest bier. It’s malty, but hopped up, to add a bright and floral character to. We let the Floyds name this one, “Too Dumb to be Evil,” but let it be known that they are evil and we are not.

This onetime brew will be released on October 28th at PT’s Showclub in Louisville during an on premise release party (see below – RSVP here). The beer will be available at Against the Grain’s downtown location the following day before small amounts head into the national market.

THE FAMOUS GROUSE BRINGS BACK THE BIRD THIS CHRISTMAS

There’s already a sense of Christmas in the air but it will all become very real on Monday when The Famous Grouse is back on our screens with a brand new advert.

For over 20 years the famous bird has graced our TV screens, heralding the start of the festive season, and this year sees the brand’s icon return but in his natural habitat, in the Highlands of Scotland.

The UK’s No.1 whisky has created two new TV adverts communicating ‘perfectly balanced’ and ‘smooth’ – two key characteristics of The Famous Grouse – underpinning the quality of the nation’s favourite whisky.

CLYDE MAY’S INTRODUCES NEW STRAIGHT BOURBON AND CASK STRENGTH WHISKEY

New Products Deliver Premium Quality and Taste While Celebrating Alabama Iconoclast

GARDEN CITY, NY, (September 20, 2016) — Clyde May’s Whiskey is pleased to introduce its newest premium spirits – a non-chill filtered, 92-proof STRAIGHT BOURBON and a 117-proof, 8-year CASK STRENGTH whiskey. Clyde May was a moonshiner by trade and a craftsman by heart, and in continued celebration of his legacy to craftsmanship, these smooth-tasting new products will debut on store shelves nationwide during September — Clyde’s birthday and National Bourbon Heritage Month.

5-year, Non-Chill Filtered, 92-proof Straight Bourbon Paying homage to Clyde May himself – a moonshine icon who made the best whiskey Alabama ever tasted – and his dedication to his craft, this non-chill filtered straight bourbon is a classic 5-year-old, easy drinking spirit. Using simple and traditional ingredients, the bourbon mash is patiently aged in heavily “alligator” charred new American oak barrels to produce exceptional flavors that feature a soft, sweet nose of brown sugar, baked apricot, wild strawberry and nutmeg. Its soft palate delivers complex aromas of barrel spice, fruit and oiled leather, while the finishes are robust, long and delicious.

Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon recently earned a Gold Medal in the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and received a 93 rating in the Ultimate Spirits Challenge. It is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in a carefully crafted cocktail.

AUTUMN MOON OVER GLENGOYNE – Scotch Whisky News

AUTUMN MOON OVER GLENGOYNE – Scotch Whisky News
aa-glengoyne2

October 22nd, 2016

We’ve collaborated with one of Scotland’s finest contemporary artists to help save one of our most iconic landmarks: the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art. We asked artist John Lowrie Morrison – known as Jolomo and famous for his striking landscapes – to create a collection of seasonal paintings inspired by the distillery. He used to sketch here as a student, and the Dumgoyne landscape means almost as much to him as it does to us.

Each painting will be printed on a limited edition gift tin. And for every gift tin sold we’ll donate a contribution to The Mackintosh Appeal, which was set up after a tragic fire damaged the art school in May 2014. ‘Autumn Moon over Glengoyne’ is the first painting in the series – a burst of orange and gold inspired by the season. Inside the tin you’ll find a bottle of the 10 Year Old, so you can raise a dram, and raise funds while you’re at it. With your help, we hope to reach £50,000. You can buy the special limited edition tin from the online shop.

New Holland Hoptronix Double IPA joins year-round lineup starting this week

New Holland Hoptronix Double IPA joins year-round lineup starting this week

[Press Release:]

(Holland, MI) – New Holland Brewing is introducing Hoptronix, a Double IPA brewed with Mosaic Hops to create a vibrant hop profile. Starting this week, the new year-round release will begin shipments in 12-ounce bottle six-packs to retailers and on draft to restaurants and bars wherever New Holland beer is sold.

New Holland is known – thanks to Mad Hatter IPA and the Hatter Family IPAs – for an obsession with hops. Therefore, an IPA with an even more abundant hop flavor was a clear next step and a great opportunity for New Holland’s brewers to push the boundaries of hop usage while still providing an amazingly enjoyable drinking experience. New Holland is so excited about this Double IPA, and test batches have been received so positively, Hoptronix will debut as part of New Holland’s year-round lineup.

“Hoptronix is a beer we have had a lot of fun with. From the beer itself to the graphics and planned launch parties. We focused on bringing forward the bold flavors of Mosaic hops in a way that will thrill hop lovers everywhere.” said Joel Petersen, VP of Marketing.

“We brought our hop game to the next level using huge amounts of Mosaic hops to tickle the tongue with bitter flavors and then delight the drinker with a clean, balanced finish. This beer will surprise you and leave you wanting more. The retro graphics bring us to a time when technology was emerging and pushing the limits of what could be done with video games (and it’s also a heck of a lot of fun to play with).”

Taproom-ONLY Barrel-Aged Java Ten FIDY, Barrel-Aged Rum Ten FIDY, and Barrel-Aged Rum Death By Coconut coming to Longmont and Brevard for special releases

(Longmont, CO & Brevard, NC & Austin, TX) – Barreled. Bigger. Bolder. Boozier.  That’s what you gotta do if you’re gonna top one highly-rated imperial stout with another.

Oskar Blues Brewery took its Ten FIDY Imperial Stout and stashed it in a blend of Kentucky bourbon barrels for a minimum of eight months. The result is a cool and drinkable concoction that gets more complex with each sip.

“Aged through four seasons and from a blend of the top bourbons around, this Ten FIDY has morphed into a monster of cranked up flavor,” said head of brewing operations Tim Matthews. “Espresso, burnt sugar, rich chocolate, and caramel notes are now combined with the vanilla, oak, and bourbon flavors and all have been smoothed out during maturation.”

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s ZX Ventures acquires top homebrew supplier, Northern Brewer

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s ZX Ventures acquires top homebrew supplier, Northern Brewer

(Minneapolis, MN) – Anheuser-Busch InBev’s “global disruptive growth group,” ZX Ventures acquired top homebrew supply shop, Northern Brewer, as announced this week. Below is the statement from founder, Chris Farley.

Brewing an Exciting Future

Friends – I started this business 23 years ago this month because of my passion for quality beer and the joy of brewing from my own home. We have seen tremendous growth in homebrewing in that time. Our community continues to expand as does the diversity of quality ingredients and equipment available.

Northern’s family is much bigger today than it was in 1993, but I’m proud to say that we have never lost our identity. Our employees and managers come to work every day with a commitment to be the best in the industry, period. Someday we want homebrewing to be as common a household craft in America as cooking or gardening. But we all know that we won’t get there through complacency.

Shmaltz Brewing Releases New Treat For Halloween: Death Hoppy Black Ale

Shmaltz Brewing Releases New Treat For Halloween: Death Hoppy Black Ale

Death Hoppy Black Ale®
7 Malts, 7 Hops, 7% ABV
Nationally Available in 4-Packs (12 oz. bottles) & Draft at Select Bars

Clifton Park, NY — Thursday, October 20, 2016 — When Shmaltz Brewing Company parted ways with their contract brewing habits and opened their very own Upstate New York brewery, Shmaltz knew the best way to commemorate that moment was to brew an extra special beer. In 2013, Death of a Contract Brewer® was born and Shmaltz’s contract brewing days passed. This year’s Death Hoppy Black Ale® is an homage to new life and the Jewish tradition of mourning. Seven days are spent mourning in Jewish culture, so when it came time to brew Death Hoppy Black Ale®, Shmaltz’s Head Brewer Richie Saunders added 7 hops, 7 malts, and ended up with 7% ABV. Overflowing with characteristics of coffee, dark chocolate, and fresh citrus with a mix of pine, the hoppy black ale’s deep roasted malt flavors provide support for a bold mix of bright and bitter West Coast hops.

Only available through Halloween, Death Hoppy Black Ale® features updated packaging design by Shmaltz’s Art Director Matt Polacheck. The award-winning designer notes, “Last year, we introduced the black and white Death sugar skull to honor our past life as a contract brewer. Borrowing elements from our rebranding of the Shmaltz logo (hop eyes and nose, malt mustache and fermenter teeth), the 2016 packaging represents where we are today at our new brewery in Clifton Park, NY. With the addition of bright colors, it further symbolizes our constant pursuit of creativity, fun and uniqueness in both design and brewing exceptional beer.”

Death Hoppy Black Ale® won “Best of the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast” with the United States Beer Tasting Championship, and “2014 Products of the Year – Beer Winner” with Drink Me Magazine’s 150 Elite Awards. Death Hoppy Black Ale® has a 96 Rating with RateBeer.com.

Perfectly summing up Death Hoppy Black Ale®, DRAFT Magazine comments on the 2014 release, “The hops’ grassy and grapefruit flavors meet dark malts’ quiet chocolate and big roast, for a palatable IPA-meets-dark-beer experience. The key to making this style work is harmonizing the roast and the hop bitterness, while allowing the best of the flavors of both worlds to express in an enlivened way: Death® hits all of those notes with ease.”

Real Ale Brewing Co. announces voluntary recall on select bottles of Devil’s Backbone, Hans’ Pils

Real Ale Brewing Co. announces voluntary recall on select bottles of Devil’s Backbone, Hans’ Pils
product-recall-dates-rev-2-600

[Press Release:]

[Just to clarify, this release is in no way related to Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Virginia. Devil’s Backbone is a beer that Real Ale Brewing Company produces.]

(Blanco, TX) – Real Ale Brewing Company, based in Blanco, TX, is announcing a voluntary recall of select 12 oz. glass bottles of two of its brands due to a potential glass defect. Although the likelihood of a defective bottle being in the market is very low (significantly less than 1%), Real Ale is issuing this precautionary recall to ensure the safety of consumers. Of approximately 11,000 cases of beer produced using the affected glass, fewer than 500 cases were delivered to Texas retail accounts. The majority of the affected cases were quarantined at the brewery or at the distributor’s warehouses once the issue was identified and did not reach retail stores. There have been no reports of injury or defective bottles from consumers at this time.

The recall includes two brewery production dates of Devil’s Backbone 6-pack bottles delivered to retail accounts in North Texas, and one production date of Hans’ Pils 12-pack bottles delivered to retail accounts in Austin, San Antonio, and the Hill Country areas. Real Ale is currently working with our distributor to remove any of the potentially affected bottles from the retail accounts in these markets.

During inspection of packaged beer at the brewery, Quality personnel identified a defect in the bottles that could result in small pieces of glass breaking off and falling into the bottle. The affected bottles, from a third party supplier, are limited to a single glass production date.

Gunbarrel Brewing Company Coming to Boulder, Colorado in 2017!

Gunbarrel Brewing Company Coming to Boulder, Colorado in 2017!

Boulder, Colorado: The founders of Gunbarrel Brewing Company, Jamie Fox and his wife Marie announce they have signed a lease on an apx. 20,000 square foot facility at 7088 Winchester Circle in the Gunbarrel area of Boulder for their self-funded brewery.

Gunbarrel Brewing Company will offer a wide variety of beer styles employing both traditional and innovative brewing techniques. “We craft innovative beers expressing an extensive range of flavors that are delicate, funky or bold, inspired by ancient and modern styles,” explains Jamie Fox “Some of our beers will refresh you after an afternoon of hiking, while others enlighten your pallet with adventurous and unexpected flavors.”

They will install a 10-barrel brewhouse built by JV Northwest of Canby, Oregon, as well as a 1-barrel pilot system which will be used for experimentation, research, and development. The couple has acquired the bulk of their equipment over the course of the past three years while searching for the perfect location for the brewery. “We took our time to find a permanent location that would provide a really welcoming environment for our guests and coworkers, someplace they would truly enjoy spending time in,” says Marie. The sizeable new facility will allow for future growth and plenty of space for implementation of their barrel and wild ale programs.

Owner, Jamie Fox will bring audacious new flavors and ancient styles to the taps as head brewer. “We recognize that there are quite a few breweries in the area. We are humbled to locate our facilities among some of the finest breweries in the market. But there are also a lot of craft beer drinkers who crave variety. We look forward to offering distinctive and innovative flavors to compliment what is already being offered in the area,” says Jamie. He is a homebrewing veteran, with an education in Brewing Technology from the world-renowned Seibel Institute. Over the course of the past 16 years, he has developed a substantial catalog of well-tested beer recipes. Jamie’s Ph.D. in neuroscience and decades of laboratory experience provide him with a unique perspective on the brewing process. He maintains a strong focus on quality control and a disciplined approach to experimentation with ingredients, coaxing both nuanced and bold flavors into his brews. “I will employ laboratory testing and quality-control mechanisms from day one,” explains Jamie “to ensure we are presenting our patrons with the best quality beer possible.”

The Brewery will play host to food trucks, live performances, and beer-centric educational events. “We are so pumped about the positive feedback we’re receiving,” Marie explained. “Gunbarrel is our home. It is such a vibrant, tight-knit place, and we couldn’t be more excited to create a lively spot for our community and our beer to come together.” The new facility will feature a large taproom, games, beer garden, and boasts substantial off-street parking.

Revolution Brewing announces recall on six beers

Revolution Brewing announces recall on six beers

(Chicago, IL) – Revolution Brewing announced a significant recall this week on six beers. More details below via the brewery website….

To Our Valued Rev Brew Fans,

Revolution Brewing is issuing a product withdrawal of batches of beers produced with our house ale yeast that do not meet our brand specifications for taste and flavor. Affected brands include Anti Hero IPA, Fist City Pale Ale, Cross of Gold Ale, Mosaic Hero IPA, Eugene Porter, and Unsessionable Imperial IPA. Please note, there are no health or safety risks involved with the consumption of this beer. This is strictly a quality issue.

The affected beers exhibit ester or phenolic flavors, which are more characteristic of Belgian-style ales, and which should not be present in our standard American ales. We believe these off-flavors were produced by a wild yeast that has gotten worse over time and was not identified in time by our quality control methods. Our brewing team has re-propagated our house ale yeast, and all beer now being packaged at the brewery meets our standards for taste and flavor.

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – the winners

Jim Murray knows how to surprise. Two years ago, he named Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 as his World Whisky of the Year, while last year saw that honour go to Canada, with Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye taking the top gong. And now, the 2017 winner has just been announced. Jim Murray’s best whisky in the world is: Booker’s Rye 13 Year Old. Jim described it as having a ‘brain-draining, mind-blowing’ nose with a finish of ‘amazing depth’, adding that it is a ‘staggering example of a magnificent rye showing exactly what genius in terms of whiskey actually means’, scoring it 97.5/100 points.

BOOKER’S RYE 13 YEAR OLD, 68.1%

Producer’s Tasting Notes An intense flavour profile with pronounced, well-balanced notes of wood and oak from the longer ageing process. The deep amber liquid offers a complex aroma with spicy notes from the rye in the mash bill. This uncut rye has a big bold flavour, but is not overpowering. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.

The other big news of the 2017 Whisky Bible is that a Scottish whisky has made Jim’s World Whiskies of the Year shortlist for the first time since 2014. The runner-up is Glen Grant 18 Year Old – here is the top three:
