You CAN Drink Yellow Snow

You CAN Drink Yellow Snow

October 20, 2016
Newport, OR — In a dedication to common sense, Rogue Ales & Spirits has canned Yellow Snow IPA for this winter’s release of its snow cult classic.

The pale-golden-hued ale features a hoppy, tropical-fruit-forward aroma complemented by a medium body and hoppyness mid-palate. Made with Oregon grown Rogue Farms hops and barley, Yellow Snow IPA returns for a long winter in bottles, on draft and now in 16-ounce cans for more thirst-quenching versatility.

“The new cans of Yellow Snow IPA are portable and lightweight,” says Rogue President Brett Joyce. “The only thing we want heavy this winter is the snowfall.”

Yellow Snow IPA is available starting November 1 in 16-ounce can four-packs, 12-ounce bottle six-packs, serigraphed 22-ounce bottles, 64-ounce growlers and on draft featuring a distinctive ceramic tap handle. Find Yellow Snow IPA on Rogue’s own Beer Finder tool. For more information about the Revolution visit Rogue.com.

A Tale of Its Own: Fiction Beer Company Rises in East Denver

A Tale of Its Own: Fiction Beer Company Rises in East Denver
Fiction Beer Company
Fiction Beer Company

Nestled in the corner of one of East Denver’s oldest neighborhoods is a gem worthy of its own tale. From a humble beginning to a community’s treasure and GABF medal-winner, Fiction Beer Company has blossomed into one of the Mile High City’s most worthy brewery stops.

Fiction’s story began over martinis, in the brilliant minds of the ultimate pairing: a book dork and beer geek.

Little did Christa [the book dork] and Ryan [the beer geek] Kilpatrick realize, the idea would lead them on an adventure riddled with obstacles, parenthood and a ton of good beer.

Plot Twists and Parenthood

“Around 2008-09, the brewery model was very small, one barrel, a lot of work and a lot of trouble,” Ryan explains, his eyes distant, reflective on the past. “We needed to have our own legs first.”

So Fiction was placed back on the shelf as the Kilpatricks established their lives and delved into parenthood. But in 2013, they went back and pulled it from its spot, dusting off the cover and revisiting the idea.

Payette Brewing Black Friday

Payette Brewing Black Friday

Payette Brewing Company’s biggest event is back! Black Friday, a celebration of dark beer, will be held at their brewery located at 733 South Pioneer Street, Boise, ID 83702 from 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm on November 25th, 2016.

Black Friday features imperial stouts and porters by Payette and craft breweries from around the country. This annual event also serves as the release of their 2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged Twelve Gauge Imperial Stout in twenty-two ounce bottles, which will be available for sale.

For the event’s fifth year, Payette is taking it not only inside their new Tap Room, but in to the brew house. The production area will be transformed in to a festival-like setting and beer will be served alongside the brewing system and 240 barrel fermenters. Also enjoy live music, food truck fare, watch Boise State play Air Force and mingle while tasting incredible (hefty) imperial stouts and porters from notable breweries, many that have been aged or infused. Payette will also have their merchandise available at a special Black Friday discounted price.

Admission to Black Friday is for those 21+ only and is free with $4 drink tokens available for sale, which includes a Black Friday commemorative glass. Buy tokens at the door or skip the line and save money with the advance purchase packages online at www.payetteblackfriday.com. Tokens can be used towards imperial stout and porter pours, select non-imperial Payette beer options, special Black Friday priced merchandise and Twelve Gauge bottles. Tokens can not be used towards food purchases.

Payette has local partners that stand by their side every year and make unique items specifically for this event: Big City Coffee and Café, City Peanut Shop, Bucksnort Soda Company and the featured non-profit, Joe Cans. Buy delicious treats including City Peanut’s Twelve Gauge Imperial Stout Peanut Brittle and enter a raffle to win a Big City decorated Christmas tree, benefitting Joe Cans.

Surly Brewing Head of Brewing Operations, Todd Haug, steps down

Surly Brewing Head of Brewing Operations, Todd Haug, steps down

[Press Release:]

(Minneapolis, MN) – After more than 10 years setting the pace of the craft beer revolution in Minnesota, Surly Brewing Co., Head of Brewing Operations Todd Haug has resigned his position at the Twin Cities Brewery.

“I’d like to thank our family, friends and fans – Surly Nation – for always believing in our vision. It never gets old to hear people tell you how much they enjoy your beer. Omar and I set out with the modest goal to build a brewery so we could create a different kind of craft beer – the kind we wanted to drink – and I think we achieved that.”

Todd earned a reputation for refusing to brew-to-style. He defined the undefinable and brewed beer his way, which was rarely the easy way, earning the brewery gold medals in the process.

Champagne Armand de Brignac Blanc de Noirs Assemblage Two (A2

Champagne Armand de Brignac Blanc de Noirs Assemblage Two (A2

Adding to its portfolio of prestige cuvées, Champagne Armand de Brignac released Blanc de Noirs Assemblage Two (A2), the House’s rarest, ultra-prestige cuvée to date.  Every bottle of Armand de Brignac Blanc de Noirs A2 is labelled with its own number within the small batch production (1 to 2,333), in addition to its disgorgement date, the company says. Crafted with hand-picked fruit from Pinot Noir growing villages, it’s an assemblage of 100 percent Pinot Noir from the 2008, 2009 and 2010 vintages. The expression was created from the very first and freshest portion of the cuvée press – a signature of all Armand de Brignac champagnes, ensuring the highest quality is achieved, the company says. Blanc de Noirs A2 rested in the cellars in France for a little more than five years. On the nose, the varietal offers grape, honeysuckle and peppermint notes, revealing hints of peach and apricot, according to the company. On the palate, it imparts fresh red fruit, mint and a hint of cinnamon, it adds. Packaged in a 750-ml bottle, Armand de Brignac Blanc de Noirs Assemblage Two (A2) is available in limited quantities nationwide for a suggested retail price of $1,000.

BALLANTINE’S LAUNCHES THE SECOND ‘ARTIST SERIES’ WITH THREE LIMITED EDITION GIFT PACKS

DESIGNED BY MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTOR AND PHOTOGRAPHER, DAVE MA

Ballantine’s, the world’s No. 2 Scotch whisky, has partnered with renowned music video director and photographer, Dave Ma, to launch three new limited e dition gift packs for 2016. Created to champion inspiring and innovative individuals who are committed to expressing their creativity in unique ways, for its second year Ballantine’s Artist Series gift packs showcase Dave Ma’s unique perspective of Scotland, the home of the whisky, in a series of stunning aerial photographs.

Moving to London from the beaches of Sydney a decade ago to pursue a career in music photography and video direction, Dave Ma started a ‘zine’ to showcase his work with emerging bands. Dave has worked with some of today’s most exciting music artists, including Bastille and Rudimental, however his repertoire extends well beyond music photography, with a newly discovered passion for capturing aerial landscape photographs.

Travelling around the world, Dave began to realise that the best TV screen was his aeroplane window . This kick-started a desire to shoot aerial views whilst flying, and, after realising that by playing with the colours in his shots he could make terrains look ‘otherworldly’, his first series of aerial landscapes were featured on the Jagwar Ma single artwork for Come Save Me.

For the 3rd year in a row, Kensington Wine Market is producing its own Whisky Advent Calendar. 2014 and 2015’s editions were a huge hit, and sold out well before the start of Advent. This year’s edition is expected to start trickling in store over the next two weeks.

We are really excited about our 2016 KWM Whisky Advent Calendar. For the third straight year we have designed and built our own exclusive Whisky Advent Calendar, featuring a custom logo Glencairn glass, 24 50ml whiskies and a 100ml Christmas Day bottling from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (The Society). The Society is the world’s largest whisky club, and bottles whiskies exclusively for its members. This year’s Calendar has a single cask from the Society that has been selected and bottled exclusively for the Calendar and Canadian Society members (750ml bottles will be made available to Society members in January!). In collaboration with the Society’s Canadian branch, we were even given the opportunity to name the whisky… Since Society whiskies are exclusively available to Society members, this is an opportunity for non-members to get their hands on a Society whisky. Recipients of the KWM Whisky Advent Calendar will be the first people to sample this exciting new whisky!

The Kensington Wine Market Whisky Advent Calendar is more than just a product for us, it is a way for us to share and connect with other whisky lovers in Calgary, Alberta and across Canada. Details on the whiskies released and their distillery will be posted on the KWM Blog each day. Recipients of the Calendar are encouraged to share their thoughts with us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The KWM Whisky Advent Calendar also comes with a 10% discount card, good for any of the whiskies in the Calendar (excepting the Society whisky), subject to availability.

Canadian Rockies 35 year old, 50% – Canadian Whisky News
AA Fountana

October 20th, 2016

Canadian Rockies 35 year old, 50%

This is the oldest and most expensive Canadian whisky on the continent. And bottled at 50%, one of the strongest. Wood, age, toffee, cooked sweet corn, fruit, and slightly dusty new jeans. Gloriously sweet, showing its ABV in a blistering pepper attack that subsides into sweetness and a mild fruitiness. Advanced Whisky Advocate Rating: 92

8 Beers We Want to Share with Favorite Fictional Presidents

8 Beers We Want to Share with Favorite Fictional Presidents

Presidents of the United States fascinate us. We think we know what they do — governing, diplomacy, fancy state dinners, golf — but an administration is so highly-guarded and spun every which way by pundits, most of what we think we know about the life a president is likely an illusion.

Thank goodness we have Hollywood to bring the job of a president to life. The best fictional commanders in chief impart oratory vibrato, MacGyver-esque intelligence or comedic levity to the land’s highest office. I admit that I can name more about Jed Bartlet’s successes in office than successes of actual presidents. Shameful? A little. 100 percent American? Absolutely. Here are the craft beers I’d crack open with my favorite fictional presidents.

President Tom Beck | Deep Impact

President Tom Beck, played by Morgan Freeman in the 1998 movie Deep Impact, was in an impossible situation. First, there was the issue of the 7-mile-long space rock coming toward Earth. Then the Messiah spacecraft mission to blow up the rock failed, splitting it into two fireballs aimed at the planet. Then Russian missiles failed to get the job done. Bombs did eventually destroy the larger of the two comets, sparing millions from an “extinction level event,” and President Beck delivered a speech about rebuilding. If I could sit down with President Beck, I’d open a bottle of Cigar City’s Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout, 2014 Batch #2. Employees lovingly nickname it the “Post-riot Huna” (for reasons I’ll let you Google), but if anything can survive the tidal wave, my money is on Huna — and President Beck deserves one.

President James Marshall | Air Force One

First as cavalier hustler Han Solo, then archeologist/investigator Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford finds himself in the role of President of the United States in 1997’s Air Force One. Marshall, along with the First Lady, their daughter, and a handful of Cabinet members and advisors are returning from a trip to Moscow when Air Force One is hijacked by terrorists, led by Gary Oldman. Marshall’s resourcefulness keeps himself and his family alive and the nation out of a second Cold War during tumultuous hours on the plane, ending with the lead hijacker’s death-by-parachute strangling at Marshall’s hands. If I could sit down for a beer with President Marshall, we’d share a bottle of Odell’s Russian Pirate. He’s good at crushing them, just ask Gary Oldman.

Dave Kovic | Dave

Presidential doppelgänger and all-around nice guy Dave Kovic gets tossed into a mess at the White House when he’s asked to step into the role of president when the actual president has a stroke doing something he definitely shouldn’t have been doing. Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, does a bang up job of convincing everyone, including the First Lady, he’s the actual president. Eventually, the First Lady, played by Sigourney Weaver, realizes she actually likes [the guy pretending to be] her husband. Dave outsmarts D.C. players to get out of the Oval Office and back to his normal life — except that life is now one where the First Lady is his new lady. If I could share a beer with Dave, it would be Spotted Cow, a cream ale from New Glarus. Well-made cream ales are one of those styles that can help you show a non-craft believer what they’ve been missing, just like nice guy Dave Kovic did when he took the Oval Office.

Winter Seasonals from Hi-Wire Brewing

Winter Seasonals from Hi-Wire Brewing

October 19, 2016

Hi-Wire Brewing has announced details of its seasonal releases for winter, including returning favorites Twice As Nice Doppelbock and Strongman Coffee Milk Stout.

Twice As Nice Doppelbock (10% ABV), inspired by a traditional German doppelbock, is a robust dark lager. Despite its full flavor and high alcohol, this beer was lagered for more than 8 weeks to make it light on the palate and incredibly smooth. Expect Vienna and Munich malt to contribute subtle flavors of fig, plum and chocolate to this big, yet easy-drinking beer.

Strongman Coffee Milk Stout (5.3% ABV), inspired by our head brewer’s cafe con leche-fueled travels in Key West, has become one of the most anticipated seasonals from Hi-Wire Brewing. Local coffee from Dynamite Roasting Co. is cold extracted and added post fermentation to this sweet, creamy beer.

Customers will start to see Strongman Coffee Milk Stout in their market beginning Monday, October 10, and the Twice As Nice Doppelbock starting October 24th.  Both beers will be available on draught and in 6-packs in Hi-Wire’s entire distribution footprint, which includes North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Tennessee and Georgia.

Twice as nice: anCnoc Single Malt Scotch Whisky unveils the 35-year-old second release limited edition

Premium Single Malt Scotch Whisky, anCnoc has announced the limited edition release of its most exclusive bottling to date; the balanced and full-bodied 35-year-old second release.

The liquid is being introduced with just 670 bottles available globally.

Laid to rest for over three decades in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, the casks have been carefully chosen by distillery manager Gordon Bruce and master blender Stuart Harvey.

Giving rise to a unique dram that still retains its youthful edge; the 35 year old has top notes of lemon curd, green apples and cut flowers followed by honey sweetness, creamy toffee, leather and spice. Warming wood smoke makes for a fragrant and rich aroma.

JACK DANIEL’S LAUNCHES TENNESSEE CALLING

Back in the 1860’s, Lynchburg Lutheran Minister and part time Distiller. Dan Call taught a young Jasper ‘Jack’ Daniel the secret of making great whiskey. With Dan’s mentorship, Jack went on to build a thriving enterprise that we would all come to know and love. Fast forward 150 years to 2016 and Jack Daniel’s is one of the world’s leading whiskey brands. To celebrate Jack’s own mentorship, Jack Daniel’s is set to inspire the next generation of bartenders with the launch of Tennessee Calling… Three bartenders from Scotland will discover the history, craft and versatility of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey so that they can create their own story. Travelling to the USA, the three winners will then be given the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with their bartending heroes and hone their craft on a trip to Tennessee and New York, helping them reach their full potential.

The first leg of their journey to Tennessee will see the winners visit New York City, to experience for themselves, how the best in the business run their bar. Working with their mentors, the 3 winners of Tennessee Calling will create, plan & host an event at The Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog in New York – The World’s Best Cocktail Bar. After leaving New York, the winners will travel to Lynchburg, Tennessee for the ultimate distillery experience, to see for themselves the whiskey making skill at The Jack Daniel Distillery.

Bartenders have until 31st October to enter.
