Right Brain Brewery Launches Naughty Girl Mint Stout in Six-Packs

Right Brain Brewery Launches Naughty Girl Mint Stout in Six-Packs

Traverse City, MI, October 28, 2016 – As the weather gets colder and some craft beer drinkers gravitate towards darker beers, Right Brain Brewery is happy to greet them with Naughty Girl Mint Stout six-packs. Naughty Girl Stout, previously available only in 22 oz bottles and on draft, takes inspiration from a well-known mint chocolate cookie, delivering complex chocolate notes with a cooling minty finish.

“Right Brain Brewery adheres to a strict ‘no extracts’ brewing policy, and Naughty Girl Stout is no exception. Six malt varieties, including Roast Barley and Chocolate Malts, provide the chocolaty notes. Biodynamic Peppermint grown by Light of Day Organics provides an authentic mint flavor,” says owner Russell Springsteen. Right Brain Sales and Marketing teams are very excited about this release, both in terms of increased shelf space presence, and the fun creative design of packaging. “Our designer created four different labels for Naughty Girl Stout, each with a different girl scout riding on a motorcycle. Consumers can expect to get multiple versions in our new six pack offering,” says Marketing Coordinator Jeff Houser.

The Biodynamic Peppermint used in Naughty Girl Stout is not the only product Right Brain has used from Light of Day Organics Farm. The brewery also sources certified Biodynamic Lavender for use in their light lavender ale, Blue Magic. Angela Macke, a Registered Nurse and Founder of Light of Day, says, “We have been fans of Right Brain and their talented team for many years, so to partner on these projects has been very satisfying and a whole lot of fun for our farm family! The botanicals we grow here are exceptionally high in essential oils, making them a treasured compliment to their already high quality beer.” Demeter Biodynamic is considered the highest standard for commercially grown food throughout the world, and Light of Day Organics, located in Leelanau County, is currently the only certified Demeter Biodynamic Farm in the state of Michigan.

Naughty Girl Stout is available now throughout the state of Michigan in 12 oz six-pack bottles, 22 oz bottles and on draft.

THE BALVENIE REVEALS MUCH-ANTICIPATED CHAPTER TWO OF THE BALVENIE DCS COMPENDIUM

‘The Influence of Oak’ explores Malt Master David Stewart MBE’s masterful leveraging of different wood types

Following the momentous launch of The Balvenie DCS Compendium Chapter One in October 2015, today the eagerly anticipated The Balvenie DCS Compendium Chapter Two is unveiled. Titled ‘The Influence of Oak’, this chapter features five extremely rare single malt whiskies. It highlights the complex manner in which different oak barrels influence the flavour of the spirit during the maturation process.

The Balvenie DCS Compendium captures the breadth of David’s achievement and contributions to the industry and his craft.

David pioneered double cask maturation or finishing during a 54 year career at The Balvenie, a legacy most notably fulfilled in The Balvenie 12 YO DoubleWood. The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2016 – Bowmore: From One Master To Another

If you made a list of the all the Scotch whiskies to try before you die, it’s a fair bet that Black Bowmore would be on it. And for those in The Whisky Show’s 2016 Bowmore masterclass, not only did they tick that particular whisky off their list, they also got to try it in the presence of Eddie MacAffer (master distiller) and David Turner (distillery manager), who have a staggering 75 years’ experience of Bowmore between them.

Edide MacAffer (left) and David Turner of Bowmore (© Simon J Hanna)

Eddie has just retired, and has passed the baton to David, so this could have been the final time the duo sat down to talk about the whiskies they have made together. ‘This will go down as a legendary tasting,’ began our host, whisky writer Dave Broom. He wasn’t wrong.

In Their Own Words – Eddie MacAffer and David Turner

Eddie: ‘They used to give us a bottle of Bowmore Deluxe a month, rather than a few drams a day. But they must have decided it was too good, because they started giving us bottles of Rob Roy instead’

David: ‘When Bowmore gets to 17 or 18 years sold, the smoke tends to die out, and you get a lot more stewed fruit’

Auchentoshan 18 Year Old Lowland Single Malt Whisky (750ml) (Elsewhere $150) ($119.99)

This whisky just shocked the hell out of us when we retasted it recently. It’s supple, textural, chewy, and full of sweet barley and pure Scotch whisky flavor. Imagine a combination of the Glenmorangie 18 and Oban 18, a whisky that is the perfect balance point between these two classic malts. The viscosity of the GlenMo meets the light, delicacy of the Oban, all coming together to showcase the amazing quality from one of Scotland’s most overlooked distilleries. You’ve got our attention again Auchentoshan! This is a stunning whisky for a great price.

David Driscoll | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: April 19, 2015

I LOVE this whisky. This is my new Glenmorangie 18. A classic sweet barley and vanilla flavor, but with extra viscosity and more weight on the palate. It’s thick and chewy. You can almost bite into it. The Glasgow distillery is becoming relevant once again. Watch out other distilleries!

Coronado Brewing Celebrates San Diego Beer Week with Two New Events

Coronado Brewing Celebrates San Diego Beer Week with Two New Events

San Diego Beer Week is almost here, and Coronado Brewing Company is ready to go with a full calendar of events. The company has dozens of beer happenings planned throughout San Diego County, including beer dinners, tap takeovers, pint nights, and two hosted events at its main brewery in Bay Park. “We look forward to San Diego Beer Week each year and we’ve brewed a ton of specialty beers to showcase at key events,” says Ryan Brooks, Brewmaster, Coronado Brewing Company. “I’m especially excited for people to try our new Guava Islander IPA, North Island IPA, and some of the small-batch brews from our pub on Coronado.”

The company is debuting two new events at its main brewery; the first event is Milled, Chilled & Jelly Filled—a beer, donut, and coffee pairing event on Saturday, November 5. Coronado partnered with Nomad Donuts to create a custom flight of mini donuts paired with special releases, including Early Bird Mocha Stout—a milk stout made with cold-brew from neighboring Bird Rock Roasters. $20 gets you five mini donuts and five, 5oz beer pairings; no tickets required.

The second hosted event is BYOBib—a seafood boil and beer event on Friday, November 11. Local food truck favorite, Big Front Door, will be onsite preparing an authentic seafood boil to be paired with custom beer flights and pints. Bibs will be provided and guests are encouraged to roll up their sleeves and dive into pots of seafood spread out on butcher-paper lined communal tables. No tickets are required; beer and seafood boil available for purchase from 5pm-closing.

Coronado Brewing is also participating in several events throughout the county, including San Diego Brewers Guild two capstone events: San Diego Brewers Guild Festival and The Beer Garden at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. The company will also host a keep-the-glass pint night at its Coronado Pub starting this Friday. For more information about Coronado Brewing’s complete list of San Diego Beer Week events, visit www.coronadobrewing.com/sdbw. Stay coastal. Cheers.

Rogue Farms in Independence, Oregon, is a little like Santa’s workshop for hop lovers. You can walk through hop fields, watch the harvest during the late summer months and bask in that beautiful nose tingling, palate watering hop aroma — and it’s all about 75 miles from Rogue’s brewery in Newport.

Rogue President Brett Joyce says the 2008 global hop crisis was the impetus that got them thinking long term about being more self-reliant in terms of ingredients.

(MORE: A Beer Lover’s Guide to Portland’s Buckman Neighborhood)

“If you believe necessity is the mother of invention, then this is a case study in that,” he says. “It was really at that point that we wanted to make sure we didn’t have to tell our brewmaster, whose nickname is ‘More Hops,’ that we didn’t have more hops, or the hops he wanted, to put into our beer.”

Rogue Farms was born and they began farming the land in 2008.

Founders Brewing Co. selects HighJump Brewer’s Edge WMS

Jason Heystek of Founders Brewing

Highly recognized craft brewery to benefit from track and trace capabilities of best-of-breed warehousing solution

MINNEAPOLIS (Oct. 26, 2016) — HighJump, a global provider of supply chain network solutions, announced today that Founders Brewing Co. has selected the HighJump™ Brewer’s Edge warehouse management solution (WMS). Founders Brewing Co., based in Grand Rapids, Mich., is a top-rated craft brewery that prides itself on making complex, flavorful ales.

Sustainable growth spanning over the past 10 years led the company to seek a WMS to replace its paper-based processes and streamline operations in its 190,000 square-foot distribution center. After evaluating several WMS solution providers, Founders Brewing Co. selected to partner with HighJump because of its dedicated focus on the craft brewing industry and its seamless integration with Orchestrated Beer built on SAP Business One.

HighJump Brewer’s Edge WMS is a specialized configuration of the HighJump AccellosOne WMS, specifically designed to provide a template-based implementation for craft breweries.

Implementing the HighJump Brewer’s Edge WMS will provide Founders Brewing Co. an extra layer of track and trace capabilities for non-batch inventory items, such as glass. In addition to achieving real-time inventory control and increased efficiency, the craft brewery is also looking forward to utilizing the solution’s keg tracking abilities to gain control of its currently unmanaged keg operations.

CHIVAS REGAL AND JAVIER BARDEM DISCUSS THE POWER OF SHARED SUCCESS

Today sees luxury whisky brand Chivas Regal launch a rallying cry to recognise the power of shared success through a 360 degree advertising campaign. The latest instalment of the Win the Right Way advertisement campaign features winner of the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2010, Javier Bardem (Skyfall), and is a demonstration of the power and impact of working together to achieve success.

In addition, the campaign delves into the stories of successful social entrepreneurs from across the globe including South Africa, Australia, Uruguay and Mexico, along with finalists from Chivas The Venture. The cast featured in the campaign brings to life the Win the Right Way campaign by exploring the stories behind the people and experiences that have helped them to achieve success.

Javier Bardem says “The most successful people I know take success and failure in the same way; you have to learn from both experiences in order to make yourself a stronger person. By surrounding yourself with people who are honest with you and by helping them in return, you will achieve success together. So, here’s to those that try, for in trying they make the world a better place.”

Ultra-Mature K&L Exclusive Islay Single Malts: Bunnahabhain & Caol Ila -Scotch Malt Whisky

Ultra-Mature K&L Exclusive Islay Single Malts: Bunnahabhain & Caol Ila -Scotch Malt Whisky
kl_logo_trans

KL-emailheader

We’ve been waiting for just the right day to release the last two whiskies from our most recent container of Scotch whisky. The drizzle is finally coming down outside, the Fall weather is beginning to encroach, and the time is right for ultra-mature, warming and robust Islay whisky. The island of Islay is the spiritual home of whisky. It’s Scotland’s Mecca for single malt pilgrims who travel around the world to visit the legendary whisky locale. But no one wants to think about sipping an old, complex, and smoky glass of 35 year old Caol Ila when it’s 92 degrees outside and the sun is shining. You drink old Caol Ila when the skies are grey, the air is crisp, and you need that bit of Islay warmth to lift your spirits after a day of winter weather. Islay itself is a region weathered by the elements. It’s windy, and rugged, and heavily shaped by the surrounding sea. Over time, that environment has shaped both its residents and its whiskies as well. After spending decades in oak barrels, these two Islay whiskies are finally ready to show you their splendor. Those looking to get an early start on the holiday shopping season will want to act quickly. Ultra-mature Islay whiskies are enough of a rarity these days as is, let alone at reasonable prices like these. The weakened British Pound definitely helped us work down the costs. When you deal with merchants like us who buy direct, you get the benefit of the currency exchange (so long as they pass it on to you like we do). In this case, you can enjoy true single malt luxury for prices that are much more reasonable than what the general market is currently offering. Quantities are extremely limited, however; especially in older casks like these where the volume has evaporated over time. If you or a loved one is a fan of Islay whisky, you won’t want to miss these.

[see Cover Photo]

1987 Bunnahabhain 28 Year Old “Hunter Laing Old & Rare” Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml) $199.99 While peated whisky fans will fawn over the 35 year old Caol Ila we’re releasing in tandem here, the Bunnahabhain 28 year is the whisky for those who love nuance and restraint. There’s no heavy smoke to be inhaled in this jewel of a single malt. There’s little smoke, whatsoever, actually. This ancient Islay whisky has everything we love about the standard Bunnahabhain 18, just with an additional ten years in wood and a drinkable cask strength proof of 49.1%. There’s that earthy, resinous stonefruit on the palate that we love so much; a creamy and supple texture that haunts your senses. The salted caramel comes in later, washing over the back of the mouth like a wave off the coast of the sea nearby the distillery. Considering the standard edition Bunnahabhain 25 was released earlier this year for a whopping $900 per bottle, our direct import program comes out looking great with this release. For $700 less you get three additional years and an unfiltered, undiluted purity. Fans of Islay whisky will be thrilled with the complexity and the value. Fans of whisky in general should consider grabbing more than one of these. Unfortunately, however, the older the cask, the more the evaporation. There’s less than 200 total bottles of this beauty. We recommend grabbing one quickly.

Spotlight on Skye: The Tempestuous Talisker at Loch Fyne Whiskies – Scotch Whisky News
AA LFW Header

Talisker 30 Year Old

One of the oldest official bottlings from the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, this Island Single Malt has been matured for three decades before bottling. The Clark Kent of the distillery, this expression is a more mild-mannered Talisker than we’re used to, but still with plenty of personality and unmistakable distillery character.

The nose has a smooth hint of peat on the morning sea air, the palate brings salted caramel with lingering black pepper and citrus before a long and salty finish with charred oak staves.

Mark’s Whisky Ramblings 147: Auchentoshan 18 Year Old 1978 Signatory

Mark Dermul, Belgian whisky blogger, tries another one from his favorite Lowland distillery. An 18 Year Old Auchentoshan distilled in 1978 and bottled in 1996. This means it has spent 20 years in the bottle, which is longer than it did on the cask. Might this be a golden oldie from Signatory? Oh, yes indeed!

Koval Distillery launches Barreled Peach Brandy

Koval Distillery launches Barreled Peach Brandy

Chicago-based Koval Distillery announced the release of Barreled Peach Brandy, the inaugural product in a new line of limited-edition spirits named Susan for President. Distilled from organic peaches and aged in Koval Rye barrels, this spirit harkens to the golden sweetness of summer, the company says.

"Susan for President is an homage to my Aunt Susan, an artist, sculptor, connoisseur of finer things and true original," Koval Co-founder and President Sonat Birnecker Hart said in a statement. "As part of her artistic approach to life, she casually campaigned for President of the World, passing out calling cards adorned with humorous, often risqué illustrations and slogans such as 'Up with fun in 91,' and 'I'm with you in '92.' The promotion of her unattainable goal had little to do with becoming president of anything; she hated bureaucracy, and enjoyed living in Carrara, Italy, the birthplace of the anarchist philosophy. Rather, she campaigned as a celebration of art, the joys of life and the constant striving to be the greatest version of oneself imaginable."

Inspired by Aunt Susan's campaign, the intricate and fanciful design is an extension of her business card, the company says. "A traditional peach brandy this is not. And a traditional peach brandy design this is not, which is fitting since Susan was not a traditional woman," said Oona Hart, principal art director of award-winning brand identity firm Dando Projects and Sonat's sister. "She never went unnoticed, and we wanted the brandy in her name to be radiant and memorable."

The Barreled Peach Brandy label was printed using the same innovative and environmentally sustainable techniques as the Koval Dry Gin label, featuring gold foil, embossing, laser cutting and die cutting.

Ethereal and delicate, a trademark of Master Distiller and Chief Executive Officer Robert Birnecker's Austrian heritage, the nose has surprising hints of white tea, wild flower and bergamot, the company says. Whiskey drinkers will appreciate the subtle, peppery entry resulting from the barrel-aging process, while the soft essence of peach that rests on the palate from start to finish will appeal to those with sweeter tastes, it says. The meticulous attention to detail employed to distill Susan for President's Barreled Peach Brandy pays off in the warm, round and fuzzy mouthfeel that mimics biting into a fresh peach with a creamy butterscotch finish, it adds.

Booker’s® Rye Whiskey Named “World Whisky Of The Year” By Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – American Whiskey News

Booker’s® Rye Whiskey Named “World Whisky Of The Year” By Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – American Whiskey News

Booker’s® Rye Whiskey Named “World Whisky Of The Year” By Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017

Deerfield, IL (October 17, 2016) – Two years after naming Yamazaki® Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 the “World Whisky of the Year,” Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible anointed Booker’s® Rye Whiskey the “World Whisky of the Year” for 2017. Booker’s® Rye, the first-ever rye whiskey released by the ultra-premium Booker’s® Bourbon brand, joins other Beam Suntory Whiskies to earn top honors at recent industry competitions, including Jim Beam Black® Bourbon, Knob Creek® Rye Whiskey and Yamazaki® Sherry Cask 2016.

“It is a high honor to be named the world’s best by Jim Murray and his authoritative Whisky Bible, and I could not be more thrilled for Master Distiller Fred Noe and his family,” said Matt Shattock, Chairman and CEO of Beam Suntory. “For Fred to achieve this honor for the brand began by his father, Booker Noe, it warms the heart of everyone at our company and reflects the utmost care and craftsmanship that goes into our American whiskies each and every day.”

After being tasted alongside 1,240 other new whiskies in this year’s judging, Booker’s Rye is described in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible as “simply a staggering example of a magnificent rye showing exactly what genius in terms of whiskey actually means.” Booker’s Rye features a never-before-released rye mash bill, aged for just over 13 years and bottled uncut and unfiltered1, true to Booker’s® Bourbon standards. Released in extremely limited quantities earlier this year, it is made from some of the last rye barrels laid down by Booker Noe and marks one of his greatest and final experiments to date.

“On behalf of my dad, Booker Noe, I could not be more proud to see Booker’s Rye named ‘World Whisky of the Year,’ said Fred Noe, Beam’s 7th Generation Master Distiller. “Dad was more than just a distiller. He was a big thinker and a man who loved to experiment – and Booker’s Rye is a true celebration of that. Together with my son, Freddie Noe, I’m excited to carry on this legacy of innovation – and our family’s 220-year tradition of crafting the highest quality bourbon and whiskey – for years to come. Let’s just say we have some exciting things ahead.”

Joining Booker’s Rye with a best-in-class ranking this year is Yamazaki® Single Malt Sherry Cask 2016 – a follow-up to the 2013 edition that won Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible’s “World Whisky of the Year” in 2015. In the 2017 Whisky Bible, Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 swept both Japanese Whisky categories, earning “Japanese Whisky of the Year” and “Single Malt of the Year (Multiple Barrels).”
