The History Moonshine Production in The United States

prohibition

Many of the first moonshine stills fired up in the heart of The Appalachian Mountains. As soon as the area was settled farmers began to grow the country's original cash crop, corn. Tennessee farmland was extremely rural at that time and most of the farmers were existing on a subsistence lifestyle. Opportunities to get a leg up in life were therefore extremely sought after. One opportunity that some clever farmers caught onto was distilling. By taking their crop and fermenting/distilling it into a spirit, profits margins could be significantly increased. Of course, the history of moonshine goes far beyond its genesis. Moonshine was the centerpiece for a rebellion. During prohibition, moonshine supplied organized crime syndicates and helped them create their empire. At the same time, bootleggers running moonshine to distributors were outfitting their cars with modifications to make them better able to outrun police. These modifications led to organized races between bootleggers, laying the foundation for modern day NASCAR.

The Whiskey Rebellion of 1791

After the Revolutionary War, the federal government was strapped for cash. In need of some serious revenue, the legislator decided to pass the wildly unpopular Whiskey Tax. In Appalachia, subsistence farmers were so impoverished that moonshine was being used as a de facto currency. Seeing the Whiskey Tax as unfairly targeting the poor, distillers opted to simply ignore the tax and continue on with business as usual. Soon, intrepid tax collectors began venturing into the area to collect on the revenue owed. These tax collectors were met with tar-and-feather along with various forms of general defiance. It wasn't long before these clashes started to turn violent, causing residents in the area to organize into a full-fledged armed rebellion. The federal government immediately responded in force to put down the rebellion. Appalachian rebels quietly put down their arms, however, friction in the region was never resolved.

The Noble Experiment

Disputes between moonshiners and the law continued into the 20th century. At the same time, the country saw the rise to the Temperance Movement. Fueled by the rising popularity of fundamentalist Christianity, the Temperance Movement soon set its sights on alcohol. By 1920 there was enough public support to pass the federal prohibition of alcohol. While fueled by positive intent, the noble experiment as it was called proved to be completely naive. Basic economics teaches us that supply will find demand, and that is precisely what happened.

Moonshiners, Bootleggers, and The Mafia

Already adept at existing outside of the law, moonshiners immediately saw prohibition as an opportunity. The stills of Appalachia fired up and moonshine began to flow out of the mountains faster than ever before. This moonshine made its way right into the hands of bootleggers. Bootleggers were the new cowboys, willing to run illegal alcohol from its place of production to the distributors in big cities. Authorities targeted bootleggers almost instantly and so began the highest speed cat and mouse game the world had ever seen. To get an edge over their pursuers, bootleggers began modifying their vehicles to increase performance. Soon bootleggers started to compete amongst each other which quickly transformed from organized machismo to modern day Nascar.

The end of prohibition came in 1933, due to the wild rise of crime and violence brought on by moonshine's distributor; The Mafia. A quick scroll through Netflix and a person can see how romanticized this period of time has become. However, the reality was far less glossy and romantic. Many people lost their lives over the ability to make a quick buck selling alcohol. This motif followed in the 80's with crack cocaine and other drugs being pushed by various gangs.

Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength Wins Liquid Gold Award in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – American Whiskey News

Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength Wins Liquid Gold Award in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – American Whiskey News

Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength Wins Liquid Gold Award in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017

“Take a bow: absolutely superb bourbon! A micro distillery bourbon worth making a macro search for.”

KIRBY, WY (Nov. 2, 2016)— Wyoming Whiskey’s first-ever Barrel Strength Bourbon scored a “Superstar” rating of 95 out of 100 and received a Liquid Gold Award in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017. Murray describes whiskies of this caliber as one of the “Superstar whiskies that give us all a reason to live.”

According to Murray, Wyoming Whiskey Barrel Strength “ticks plenty of boxes here for even the most hard line bourbon lover.” He described the tasting experience as “a stunning volley of molasses and, presumably, rye as there is a real crisp, juicy quality to this delivery. Sets all your taste buds on edge and they are not given a chance to stand down, as the liquorice mounts up in extraordinary degrees.”

The Barrel Strength Bourbon label was created when two special barrels were discovered by Distiller Sam Mead and industry consultant and master blender Nancy Fraley in the fall of 2015. Barrels #442 and #443 had been subjected to extreme heat in their infancy and, as a result, leaked significantly over the years. A total of 22 gallons remained in these two barrels, collectively, and only 96 bottles were made available in select markets. These bottles sold out before they could even hit the shelves and Jim Murray received a fleeting sample of what he would ultimately characterize as “Liquid Gold”.

“Two of our barrels leaked significantly during their time in the warehouse. We believe this accelerated the oxidation process and turned them into excellent barrels of bourbon,” said Wyoming Whiskey Distiller, Sam Mead. “We are honored that Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, one of the most trusted sources in the industry, identified how special this bourbon is.”

Booker’s® Rye Whiskey Named “World Whisky Of The Year” By Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – American Whiskey News

Booker’s® Rye Whiskey Named “World Whisky Of The Year” By Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – American Whiskey News

Booker’s® Rye Whiskey Named “World Whisky Of The Year” By Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017

Deerfield, IL (October 17, 2016) – Two years after naming Yamazaki® Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 the “World Whisky of the Year,” Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible anointed Booker’s® Rye Whiskey the “World Whisky of the Year” for 2017. Booker’s® Rye, the first-ever rye whiskey released by the ultra-premium Booker’s® Bourbon brand, joins other Beam Suntory Whiskies to earn top honors at recent industry competitions, including Jim Beam Black® Bourbon, Knob Creek® Rye Whiskey and Yamazaki® Sherry Cask 2016.

“It is a high honor to be named the world’s best by Jim Murray and his authoritative Whisky Bible, and I could not be more thrilled for Master Distiller Fred Noe and his family,” said Matt Shattock, Chairman and CEO of Beam Suntory. “For Fred to achieve this honor for the brand began by his father, Booker Noe, it warms the heart of everyone at our company and reflects the utmost care and craftsmanship that goes into our American whiskies each and every day.”

After being tasted alongside 1,240 other new whiskies in this year’s judging, Booker’s Rye is described in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible as “simply a staggering example of a magnificent rye showing exactly what genius in terms of whiskey actually means.” Booker’s Rye features a never-before-released rye mash bill, aged for just over 13 years and bottled uncut and unfiltered1, true to Booker’s® Bourbon standards. Released in extremely limited quantities earlier this year, it is made from some of the last rye barrels laid down by Booker Noe and marks one of his greatest and final experiments to date.

“On behalf of my dad, Booker Noe, I could not be more proud to see Booker’s Rye named ‘World Whisky of the Year,’ said Fred Noe, Beam’s 7th Generation Master Distiller. “Dad was more than just a distiller. He was a big thinker and a man who loved to experiment – and Booker’s Rye is a true celebration of that. Together with my son, Freddie Noe, I’m excited to carry on this legacy of innovation – and our family’s 220-year tradition of crafting the highest quality bourbon and whiskey – for years to come. Let’s just say we have some exciting things ahead.”

Joining Booker’s Rye with a best-in-class ranking this year is Yamazaki® Single Malt Sherry Cask 2016 – a follow-up to the 2013 edition that won Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible’s “World Whisky of the Year” in 2015. In the 2017 Whisky Bible, Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2016 swept both Japanese Whisky categories, earning “Japanese Whisky of the Year” and “Single Malt of the Year (Multiple Barrels).”

EDRINGTON AWARDS KEY CONTRACT TO ELITE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR NEW MACALLAN DISTILLERY

Software process control system to ensure iconic new distillery and visitor centre operate like clock-work

LIVINGSTON, Scotland – 20 October 2016 – Elite Control Systems Ltd, a leading provider of systems integration and engineering support services, announced that it has been awarded a major contract by Scotland’s leading premium spirits company Edrington for its new distillery and visitor centre for The Macallan whisky, one of the world’s leading luxury Scotch malt whiskies.

Nestled in the parklands of The Macallan Estate in Speyside, the contemporary distillery promises to be, according to Edrington, “a site of major architectural significance,” as well as a huge boost to tourism and the local economy. With architects Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, designers of the Millennium Dome and Pompidou Centre, commissioned to design and build it, the new facility will not only “complement the natural beauty of the area,” but be highly innovative and environmentally sound.

Edrington is relying on Elite Control Systems to write the full process software control package, and provide ongoing support services following commissioning. This combination of technology and 24-hour technical support will ensure that the automated control systems that Edrington uses to operate the new plant function properly, so that production remains on track and the visitor centre remains open to welcome thousands of visitors all year-round.

KL-emailheader

October 24th, 2016

Orphan Barrel “Rhetoric” 22 Year Old Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey (750ml – ships like 1.5L due to bottle shape) ($119.99)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: “Amber-hued and bright in the glass, this delivers big caramel and toffee, interwoven with drier leather, espresso, cigar wrapper and cocoa. It’s best with a little dilution, which coaxes out rounded almond notes on this pleasing sipper. (KN)” (09/2016)

K&L Notes: Maxim called the Rhetoric 22-Year-Old a “top-shelf triumph,” saying, “The mash bill for Rhetoric Whiskey is 86% corn, 8% barley and 6% rye. Beginning with hints of toasted grains, cherries and oak wood, Rhetoric 22-Year-Old tastes of toasted oak and dark chocolate with ripe banana and baking spices of clove and anise, while the finish is long and woody ending with dark chocolate notes. In other words, you’ll want to sip this one slowly….” (JPS, 5/2016)

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2017 – the winners

Jim Murray knows how to surprise. Two years ago, he named Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 as his World Whisky of the Year, while last year saw that honour go to Canada, with Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye taking the top gong. And now, the 2017 winner has just been announced. Jim Murray’s best whisky in the world is: Booker’s Rye 13 Year Old. Jim described it as having a ‘brain-draining, mind-blowing’ nose with a finish of ‘amazing depth’, adding that it is a ‘staggering example of a magnificent rye showing exactly what genius in terms of whiskey actually means’, scoring it 97.5/100 points.

BOOKER’S RYE 13 YEAR OLD, 68.1%

Producer’s Tasting Notes An intense flavour profile with pronounced, well-balanced notes of wood and oak from the longer ageing process. The deep amber liquid offers a complex aroma with spicy notes from the rye in the mash bill. This uncut rye has a big bold flavour, but is not overpowering. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.

The other big news of the 2017 Whisky Bible is that a Scottish whisky has made Jim’s World Whiskies of the Year shortlist for the first time since 2014. The runner-up is Glen Grant 18 Year Old – here is the top three:

Wyoming Whiskey Releases a Straight American Whiskey – American Whiskey News

Wyoming Whiskey Releases a Straight American Whiskey – American Whiskey News

Wyoming Whiskey Releases a Straight American Whiskey

Kirby, WY (Oct. 4, 2016) – Wyoming Whiskey has created Outryder, a Straight American Whiskey, for this fall. Outryder, represents their first use of rye, along with corn and malted barley, to craft a straight whiskey from two distinct mash bills. These two whiskies were laid down in November of 2011 at the behest of co-founder David DeFazio. The first mash bill contains 48% winter rye, 40% corn, and 12% malted barley and the second reflects a traditional bourbon mash bill of 68% corn, 20% winter rye, and 12% malted barley. All grains are non-GMO and grown in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming.

Wyoming Whiskey Distiller, Sam Mead, with the tasting input of industry specialist and connoisseur, Nancy Fraley, fine-tuned the new creation.

Fraley gave Outryder excellent marks, “I’m absolutely loving this ‘rye!’ I have to say that it is my favorite Wyoming Whiskey product.” According to Fraley, Outryder has an initial nose of creamy browned butter with cinnamon, clove and allspice, along with freshly baked, dark-rye bread. Hints of orange blossom honey are on the palate. A long, spicy rye finish is coupled with hints of buttery toffee.

“While bourbon continues to be our focus, it is important to show that a variety of great whiskies can be made in Wyoming,” commented Co-Founder, David DeFazio. “Outryder is the spicier brother of our Small Batch Bourbon and has quickly become a favorite among our distilling team.”

Jack Daniels “Our Town” – American Whiskey News

Jack Daniels “Our Town” – American Whiskey News

October 5th, 2016

You can’t aim for or feign authenticity; it’s not something that you can just try on for size like a jacket. Authentic means doing your own thing, the very best way you know how, without worrying about what everybody else is doing. And that’s exactly what Jack Daniel’s has been doing for 150 years.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey is a product not just of ingredients or process, but also of the Lynchburg, TN culture and time-honored traditions that created and preserved it for 150 years. That culture stands against superficiality, against half-truths, against losing sight of what’s important, and it stands strong. Authentic. And through a new series of films, Jack Daniel’s will honor their hometown and its people – the individuals dedicated to making the very best whiskey they can, every day.

Jack Daniel’s will kick off the series with the debut of “Our Town” – a 60-second anthem spot that shows people who they are and who they’ve always been. Created in partnership with Arnold Worldwide, “Our Town” and accompanying 60, 30 and 15-second films will highlight the people of Lynchburg – from its 5th generation residents, to a man that can lift a 526-pound barrel of whiskey, to a woman named Hiawatha Kitty McGee. The stories were designed to reinforce an emotional connection with the Jack Daniel’s faithful and provide a launching point for the next 150 years.

This launch represents a continuation of the brand’s celebration of the 150th Anniversary milestone of the Jack Daniel Distillery – the oldest registered distillery in the U.S. Earlier this year, Jack Daniel’s and Arnold launched The Jack Daniel’s Barrel Hunt to unite Friends of Jack across the globe, with 150 authentic handcrafted whiskey barrels being hidden at historic and cultural sites in more than 55 countries over the course of 90 days. The global program kicked off in Lynchburg, TN on July 1 and is running through the end of the month, September 30.
