Gone Fission: Controversial nuke plant near NYC shuts down

Seth Wenig / AP

This Feb. 28, 2017, file photo shows Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, N.Y. Indian Point will permanently stop producing nuclear power Friday, April 30, 2021, capping a long battle over a key source of electricity for nearby New York City that opponents called a safety threat to millions in the densely packed metropolitan region.

BUCHANAN, N.Y. — Indian Point will permanently stop producing nuclear power Friday, capping a decades-long battle over a key source of electricity in the heart of New York City's suburbs that opponents have called a threat to millions living in the densely packed region.

The retirement of the Indian Point Energy Center along the Hudson River could increase New York's short-term reliance on natural gas plants, despite the state's goal of reducing carbon emissions. But Gov. Andrew Cuomo and others who fought for its shutdown argue any benefits from the plant are eclipsed by the nightmare prospect of a major nuclear accident or a terror strike 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of the city.

Biden speech takeaways: Government is good, and so are jobs

Melina Mara / The Washington Post via AP

President Joe Biden arrives to speak to a joint session of Congress, Wednesday, April 28, 2021, in the House Chamber at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden returned to the U.S. Capitol, his home for more than three decades, and used his first address to Congress to make the case that the era of big government is back.

Biden said the U.S. is “on the move again” after struggling through a devastating pandemic that killed more than 570,000 Americans, disrupted the economy and shook daily life. And he pitched an expansive — and expensive — vision to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges, water pipes and other infrastructure, bolster public education and extend a wide swath of other benefits.

GOP's Sen. Scott suggests Dems use race as political weapon

Senate Television via AP

In this image from Senate Television video, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., delivers the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, in Washington.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tim Scott accused Democrats on Wednesday of dividing the country and suggested they're wielding race as “a political weapon," using the official Republican response to President Joe Biden’s maiden speech to Congress to credit the GOP for leading the country out of its pandemic struggles and toward a hopeful future.

Scott, R-S.C., in his nationally televised rebuttal of Biden's address, belittled the new president's initial priorities — aimed at combating the deadly virus and spurring the economy — as wasteful expansions of big government.

Review: Jose Cuervo Playamar Sparkling Tequila – Mango, Grapefruit, and Lime

Jose Cuervo Playamar Lime

Rob Theakston April 28, 2021

Along with a pandemic and general global turmoil, the last few years have also brought us the sparkling, ready-to-drink craze that seems to be in full bloom with no foreseeable end in sight. Never one to miss an opportunity, the powers that be at Cuervo have jumped in, and the results are pleasantly surprising.

The primary ingredients are straightforward and simple: Seltzer water and Cuervo tequila mixed with flavoring. Zero carbs, zero sugar, gluten-free. As minimalist as it gets. There are four flavors from which to choose: Mango, Black Cherry, Lime, and Grapefruit. We received three of the four for review consideration.

Each serving is about 90 calories with an abv of 4.5%.

Review: Corkcicle Rifle Paper Co. Hydrangea Collection

Corkcicle Rifle Co Hydrangea Collection

Monica Uhm April 28, 2021

As you peruse the local stores and websites for Mother’s Day gift ideas, perhaps you have also asked yourself, Can Mom have too many travel mugs? (Asking for a friend.)

Let’s be realistic. We live in the age of zero-waste consciousness, life on-the-go, and Covid obsession. Travel mugs, water bottles, and similar accoutrements have joined the ranks of accessories. An “accessory” is both functional and an expression of the beholder (I.e. this will hold my water, won’t spill, and I’m feeling perky/mellow/austere today).

On April 12, Corkcicle released its Hydrangea collection as part of an ongoing partnership with Rifle Paper Co. We focus on the 16 ounce travel mug, 16 ounce tumbler and 12 ounce stemless wine cups in this review. Clusters of hydrangea adorn the vessels in a serene but lively palette of sky blue, natural greens, and soft white.

There is something appealing about the the simplicity and fluidity of the design. It is classic and cute (in the most flattering sense of the word). There is whimsy and grace. The tones evoke the lightness of spring and the opening up of the world, both botanically and socially. According to the company, designs are applied by hand and finished in a high gloss, which has a nice feel on the grip.

Guac On The Rock Campaign Supports The On-premise

To encourage people around the country to support their local restaurants, entertainer Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his year-old Teremana tequila brand have launched the “Guac on the Rock” initiative. From May 1 through May 5, Teremana will reimburse restaurant goers for their guacomole, up to $1 million of guac in total, when they purchase guacamole with any Teremana Tequila cocktail.

Tuna Tostadas For Cinco de Mayo

Sangre De Hombres

Serena, an open-air restaurant and bar in Miami Beach’s new Moxy South Beach hotel, channels the charming rooftop and patio restaurants of Oaxaca and Mexico City. The menu offers shareable classic dishes combined with a modern interpretation of traditional Latin and Mexican cuisine.

Serena’s executive chef and partner Scott Linquist started his restaurant career as a busboy in Los Angeles, and developed a passion for Mexican food while cooking at the Border Grill in Santa Monica. Linquist later created and developed New York’s Dos Caminos as the executive chef, and wrote a best-selling cookbook, Mod Mex.

In Mexico, Linquist has cooked in homes from the mountains of Oaxaca to the jungles of the Yucatán, tracking down traditional recipes and techniques and leading culinary tours. “I always say that I’m a gringo on the outside, but my heart is Mexican,” he says. “I’ve traveled all across the country to study the characteristics of each region’s cuisine.”

Serena’s menu features authentic and elevated Mexican classics, such as several seafood tostadas. The Seared Tuna Tostadas, with sushi grade tuna, avocado mousse, pickled carrots and radish, and micro shiso sesame aioli, would make a unique and delicious dish for Cinco de Mayo or any summertime entertaining.

What to drink with the tostadas? Just about any of Serena’s snappy, sexy cocktails—prepared in the greenhouse-like bar, with glass garage-style doors that open to the warm beach breezes—would do. Moxy Hotel bar manager Carlos Lopez would suggest his Sangre De Hombres mezcal cocktail. The drink is an ode to Breaking Bad series actors Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, who launched Dos Hombres mezcal in 2019.

A Second Life for Winemaking's Leftover Grape Skins

As vintners and scientists search for ways to increase the sustainability of farming and winemaking practices, some are looking to give grape pomace, or marc, new life. This oft-forgotten byproduct of winemaking accounts for thousands of tons of waste annually. Past research has suggested numerous alternative uses, however, from grapeseed oil to biofuel to beauty products. Now a recent study has found that this wine byproduct of skins, stems and seeds could be a potential health supplement.

Researchers at University of California at Davis found that pomace from Chardonnay grapes contains significant amounts of oligosaccharides, a type of carbohydrate found in a variety of plant and human tissues. Studies on oligosaccharides have found that the compound helps promote immune and intestinal health. It's an ingredient in breast milk that feeds a strain of bacteria in infants' intestines that helps build immunity against illness and disease

Historically, pomace has been used to make a diluted wine product called piquette. Enjoyed by harvest workers, the low-alcohol drink is made by mixing pomace and water. Some vintners have also found use for it in composting or for animal feed. Because pomace can account for up to 30 percent of a grape's total weight, its disposal poses some environmental concerns. Numerous efforts have been made to find some alternative uses.

The new study, led by food science professor Daniela Barile and master's candidate and lead author Amanda Sinrod, looked to tackle the waste problem by determining which beneficial compounds in pomace might be harnessed. "It's all about sustainable wine production and finding a second life for wine grapes," said Barile in a statement. "Early results are encouraging that marc could be a valuable source for oligosaccharides and other compounds that support health and nutrition."

The team partnered with Jackson Family Wines and Sonomaceuticals, a firm founded by Jackson Family's Barbara Banke and Peggy Furth of Chalk Hill to develop new sustainability ideas. It collected Chardonnay marc from Jackson and tested the molecular composition. They found that levels of oligosaccharides were higher than those found in finished wine.

Review: Abasolo Ancestral Corn Whisky

Abasolo Ancestral Corn Whisky

Christopher Null April 28, 2021

Abasolo isn’t just corn whiskey, it’s whiskey — or whisky, as it seems they say in some parts down south — made from Mexican Cacahuazintle corn, an ancient “ancestral” grain. The bulk of the corn used in the whisky is nixtamalized, a process used to turn corn into masa (which is used for tortillas and such), before being further mashed, fermented, and distilled. It’s unclear for how long this whisky is aged, or even what it’s aged in, but judging from the pale color, it can’t be too long, and it’s probably not new oak barrels.

From first blush, the whisky is intense: Know that you’re getting into a heavy duty experience here that I expect many drinkers will find challenging, bold on the nose with notes of both raw and toasted cereals, mushroom, turned earth, and tar. The palate is again quite aggressive, again pushy with a corn-obsessive attack, but one which is filtered mercifully through some sweetness that quickly offers notes of marzipan, coconut, and a squeeze of lemon. Before too long you’re thinking of dessert, not tamales. The finish doesn’t much change the game, offering a flavor reminiscent of sweet corn tomalito, a gentle pepper note, and some lingering smokiness, though its sweetness lingers alongside these more savory notes.

While not an overly complex whisky, Abasolo is actually quite interesting in comparison to American corn whiskeys, offering a unique take on what is often a straightforward (and often face-punching) experience. Much better than expected, and worth a sip when you’re feeling adventurous.
